Electric vehicles and SUVs are becoming more popular than ever. So when you give an SUV-like vehicle an electric engine, it’s bound to get attention. Surprisingly, the Audi e-tron is quickly becoming a critic favorite.

MotorTrend recently compiled a list of every electric vehicle coming out in 2020 that gets more than 200 miles per charge. The Audi e-tron made the list and appears to be a favorite due to its non-electric features.

The 2021 Audi e-tron doesn’t look like your typical electric vehicle

The 2021 Audi e-tron isn’t your typical electric SUV. In fact, you wouldn’t realize it’s an electric SUV just by looking at it. 

Rather than following the script set up by Tesla, Audi has decided to stick with the general body shape that has worked for so many of its other vehicles. That played a rather large role in MotorTrend’s appreciation for the e-tron.

Even better than the fact that it doesn’t scream ‘electric,’ the e-tron also doesn’t drive like one. MotorTrend reports, “In keeping with its largely inconspicuous appearance, the Audi E-Tron drives much like any other Audi—and that’s the whole point […] This is the EV for those who don’t want to broadcast that fact to everyone nearby.”

For those who have made the electric vehicle leap and aren’t pleased by the way they drive, this could be a way to tempt them back in. 

The 2021 Audi e-tron isn’t the cheapest on the list

The 2021 Audi e-tron is far from being the cheapest on MotorTrend’s list; it starts at $66,995. Audi has actually lowered the price by about $9,000 from what the 2020 model costs, but that’s still twice what some other EVs on the list go for. So, is it worth the extra money you’ll pay?

The 2020 e-tron got slammed for only getting a range of 204 miles, but Audi addressed this. The 2021 model gets 222 miles without a single drop of gas to propel it along. It also gets 78/78/78 MPGe (city/highway/combined). 

The interior is also as nice as you’d expect from an Audi, with lots of tech like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and heated seats. You also get a panoramic sunroof. Given the fact that some cheaper vehicles don’t offer features like this, it does give Audi an edge over the competition.

Critics love the Audi e-tron, but not for $66,995. In fact, they have recommended buyers go with the Tesla Model Y instead. It gets better mileage and offers more for a much lower price.

Which other vehicles made the list?

The Audi e-tron has a sibling on the list, known as the 2021 Audi e-tron Sportback. It looks more modern with slick curves and a raked roof. This results in less headroom for passengers in the back, so the rear seats definitely aren’t suitable for adults. 

The e-tron Sportback starts at $70,145, but it only gets a range of 218 miles. The fuel economy is 76/78/77 MPGe (city/highway/combined).

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has made it on to the list, and it’s a much-anticipated arrival. It will be available for purchase in late 2020 and is one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the list at $44,995.

The other vehicles to make the cut include the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric, the 2020 Jaguar I-Pace, the 2020 Tesla Model X, the 2020 Tesla Model Y, the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, and the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. 

If you’re looking for a cheap electric car, then the Hyundai Kona Electric costs only $38,330. The Volkswagen ID.4 is $37,000, making it the cheapest electric vehicle on the list.
