Goodness, we are shocked. We thought the 2021 Chevy Colorado was going to be a real contender this year, but the reliability ratings have us shocked. The Chevrolet Colorado could be a risky investment. 

How Reliable is the 2021 Chevy Colorado? 

We know that the Chevy Colorado has a checkered past. It was discontinued in 2008 due to low sales and reliability issues. However, it came back with a fresh start. Or at least we thought it has one, but apparently, it still has some significant issues. 

According to Consumer Reports, the 2021 Chevy Colorado has a predicted reliability rating of 2 out of 5. That’s below average and doesn’t give us much confidence in it. Also, to get reliability ratings, Consumer Reports sends out surveys to owners for them to review. 

With these surveys, owners report problems that occurred, how satisfied they are with their vehicle, how it drives, potential trouble spots, and more. Safety ratings and recalls are also taken into consideration to provide honest ratings. 

Problems with the Chevy Colorado 

If you look at trouble spots for the Chevy Colorado, you can see that more issues have emerged over the past few years. The 2015 and 2016 Chevy Colorado models rank higher than the 2017, 2018, and 2019 models. 

The 2017 Chevy Colorado seems to be when engine problems became a potential issue. Those problems spread to the 2018 model too. According to Car Complaints, engine and transmission problems include vibrations, an annoying shutter, loud squealing sounds, and more. 

Some drivers faced sudden acceleration failure, random stalling, and more. Dealerships and mechanics also seemed unable to repair these problems in most cases, while some owners experienced easy fixes. 

How safe is the Chevy Colorado? 

The 2021 Chevy Colorado hasn’t been tested yet, but we can take a peek at the 2020 model that received moderate scores. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a score of 4 out of 5 stars. It received average scores from the IIHS as well. 

What’s interesting is how the Chevy Colorado scored a poor rating for its headlights and only got a basic rating for its forward collision mitigation system. So, it could be hard to see at night, and the system may not help you prevent from hitting something as well as it should. 

The Colorado also only received 3 out of 5 stars from its rollover test, so remember that before flooring your truck around curves. Also, it scored a marginal rating for the IIHS small front passenger overlap test. 

Also, speaking of safety, not many features come standard with Colorado. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and more are optional features that you can pay for. Meanwhile, rivals offer them for free. 

It also lacks advanced safety features such as blind-spot warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rear vision camera. But it does have a teen driver safety setting. This is odd. It will alert you if your kid drives too fast or past curfew but won’t assist them in a collision? 

Now we aren’t sure what you’re paying for with the 2021 Chevy Colorado. Sure, it has a new, more aggressive look, but it’s pretty outdated in terms of tech. It can tow up to 7,000 lb, but it’s pretty expensive and bare-bones for a work truck.
