The 2021 Chevy Silverado Got a Competitive Multifunction Tailgate
To be a competitive truck, you need to get your rear in gear! That’s why the 2021 Chevy Silverado is gaining a new multifunctional tailgate. Check out what the Chevy Silverado can do with its new Multi-Flex tailgate.
The 2021 Chevy Silverado Multi-Flex tailgate
In 2019, GMC introduced the Sierra 1500 with a revolutionary MultiPro tailgate. It has the ability to flip and fold into seven different configurations. Meanwhile, the Chevy Silverado had its own advanced tailgate features. You could power lower and lift the tailgate from inside the cab.
Now the 2021 Chevy Silverado is taking things to the next level with the Multi-Flex tailgate. The tailgate can be used as a regular tailgate, fully lowered, the mid-gate can be lowered to handle larger loads, a flip-up divider can be used with the mid-gate to secure longer loads.
The mid-gate can also be lowered to provide closer access to the truck bed, and the divider can be used as a step. You also have the option to add Bluetooth speakers and lighting to the tailgate for more adventuring.
Note: The Multi-Flex tailgate is the same as the MultiPro, just with a new name.
Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 multifunctional tailgates
The Ram 1500 also has a multifunctional tailgate. It has a 60/40 split and can swing up like barn doors, allowing you to get closer to the cargo bed. This also allows you to access your cargo while a trailer is hitched.
You can still use this tailgate as normal because it can still hold up to 2,000 lb when folded flat. Ram recently came out with an aftermarket step that can be attached to the tailgate. It folds out of the way when not in use.
On both sides of the truck bed, the Ram 1500 has optional RAM BOXES that provide lockable storage. The bins are waterproof, illuminated, and drainable. Also, there are optional 1150 volt outlets available in the storage area.
The Ford F-150 has a new multifunctional tailgate that’s focused on being more useful at work sites. When you fold it flat, you’ll find cleats to tie down long items and pockets to attach clamps.
It also has pencil holders and a ruler. You can clamp wood down and cut it with a circular saw right on the tailgate. Other optional tailgate features include a tablet holder, a smooth surface for writing, and a cup holder.
What else is new for the 2021 Chevy Silverado?
The 2021 Chevy Silverado is expected to have towing enhancements. A GM engineer shared that the Chevy Silverado 1500 could have 2.7-liter turbo and 3.0-liter diesel max towing enhancements.
Currently, the 3.0-liter diesel engine can only tow up to 9,300 lb while the Ford F-150 Power Stroke can tow up to 11,400 lb, and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel can pull up to 12,560 lb.
The 2021 Chevy Silverado is also expected to gain trailering tech from the 2021 Silverado HD, including new reversing camera angles on the rearview mirror or infotainment screen.
