The cliché goes, ‘everything is bigger in Texas.’ That’s why it’s no surprise that drivers in the Lone Star State love SUVs that are big on power and spaciousness. No other full-size SUV defines these characteristics more than the 2021 Dodge Durango.

The fun-to-drive Durango is an ideal vehicle for a wide range of drivers. It can transport up to seven people as a family SUV. This is a tough market to corner since some SUVs can become cramped in the third row. Dodge has also created exceptional performance-enhanced Durangos that can dominate the track or traverse rugged terrain with ease. On top of all this, the Durango is even a fantastic vehicle to bring to any tailgate. What more could a Texan want in a car? It turns out, not too much.

The Texas Automotive Writers Association (TAWA) named the 2021 Dodge Durango the SUV of Texas. In addition, the publication honored the Durango SRT Hellcat as the best full-size SUV.

How did the TAWA come to its decision, and what makes the 2021 Dodge Durango stand out from its competitors? Let’s break down what Texas loves about this rugged SUV.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) put on quite the show at the TAWA’s annual Texas Truck Rodeo. Dodge, Ram, and Jeep models combined to help FCA take home the most awards of any manufacturer.

The event, which took place in October, hosted 27 TAWA members, allowing them to drive 39 trucks and SUVs on an off-road course. Thirteen brands took part in the 2020 Texas Truck Rodeo, including luxury manufacturers like Rolls-Royce and Land Rover. Every model was evaluated by its merits in performance, value, interior, exterior, and more.

These experts were enamored with the 2021 Dodge Durango, but that doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. The Durango earned the honor of being named the Full-Size SUV of Texas six times in the past eight years. The addition of the limited-edition Durango SRT Hellcat only strengthened its case for this year’s award.

“What’s not to love about the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat?” said TAWA President Kristin Shaw via an FCA press release. “With 710 hp, AWD, quicker 0-60 MPH times than most sport cars, and 8,700 pounds of towing capability, the three-row Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat delivers unmatched performance that allows you to bring your entire family along for a roaring-fun ride.”

The 2021 Dodge Durango is a wild ride

It’s obvious that the American-bred Durango takes cues from its muscle car brothers, the Charger and Challenger. The 2021 Dodge Durango puts other full-size SUVs to shame with its incredible engine lineup.

Dodge Durango buyers typically know what they’re getting into. The Durango isn’t the most affordable SUV, and it doesn’t have the best lineup of safety features. However, it does has personality, and it is built for families who like an extra dose of excitement.

It comes standard with a 293-hp 3.6-liter V6, which is already significantly more power than rivals like the Mazda CX-9 offers. Buyers can also opt for the legendary 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, which kicks out 475 hp. Finally, a lucky few can experience the thrill of the Durango Hellcat’s 710-hp 6.2-liter supercharged V8, which sprints from 0-60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds.

Meanwhile, its cabin is quite spacious, and it can accommodate up to 85 cubic feet of space with its rear rows folded down. The 2021 Dodge Durango also well-equipped with technology. It comes standard with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and four USB ports. When you upgrade to the available 10.1-inch touchscreen, you’ll get wireless versions of the smartphone integration systems. Other available features include a wireless charging station, a 19-speaker premium sound system, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Do we recommend buying the 2021 Dodge Durango?

The Durango isn’t the right full-size SUV for everyone, but it is perfect for those who embrace a Texas-size lifestyle. If you’re looking for a vehicle that can do more than tote the children to and from school, then the 2021 Dodge Durango is right up your alley.
