The 2021 Ford F-150 is Delayed Due to An Axle Shortage
The 2021 Ford F-150 faces another delay because of the new axles that’s needed for the Max Towing package. So, if you’re looking to tow with your new Ford F-150, you may have to wait a little longer.
2021 Ford F-150 Max Trailer Tow package delay
The bad news is that the 2021 Ford F-150 Max Tow package has been delayed, but the good news is that Ford is taking the time to ensure that the new F-150 model is properly equipped to tow 14,000 lb. According to Pickup Truck Talk, needing a new axle proves that the Ford F-150 can actually tow up to 14,000 lb, and the numbers aren’t just being made up.
The Ford F-150 with the Max Tow package has a new 9.75-inch 3/4-floating rear axle to improve load-carrying capacities. However, due to a supply shortage of parts, it’s unclear how long the models that can tow up to 14,000 lb will be delayed.
This axle is similar to the design of the axles found on heavy-duty trucks. It has double bar ball bearings to allow the wheels to spin. This will help you not be out of luck if you snap an axle shaft.
Also, with the tow package, you may get a different type of frame that’s thicker in different areas to handle more weight as well. So, with the heavier axle, the thicker frame could help improve the ride quality.
What comes in the Ford F-150 Max Tow package?
You can add the Max Trailer Tow package to your 2021 F-150 for about $1,350. You need XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, or Platinum trim to add it. Also, the Heavy-Duty Payload package is required to add it to the XL. The package can be added with the 3.5-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8, 3.5-liter PowerBoost Hybrid V6, and 3.0-liter diesel engines.
Depending on your trim level, the package includes a 3.55 or 3.73 electronic locking rear axle, seven-pin wiring harness, 36-gallon fuel tank, class IV trailer hitch receiver, pro trailer backup assist, smart trailer tow connector, an integrated trailer brake controller, and an upgraded rear bumper. Optional equipment includes the Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 system and the Tow Technology package.
While a beefier axle and thicker suspension do help the truck carry more weight, there are a few potential drawbacks as well. The Ford F-150 will be heavier as a result. This could impact its fuel economy and ride quality. However, the stiffer suspension should help absorb bumps and impacts.
Does the Ford F-150 face any other delays?
The 2021 Ford F-150 is doing its best to meet demands. However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, there has been a production shortage. A majority of manufacturers were closed to protect workers. Also, some plants switched from manufacturing vehicles and parts to personal protective equipment.
According to Torque News, some models have been delayed while others are being delivered on schedule. For example, models with the Max Recline seats have been delayed for unknown reasons.
Also, the Ford F-150 models with the 3.0-liter diesel engine have been delayed. This could be because it’s one of the least popular engine options, so it would make sense for Ford to focus on other models first.
