The 2021 Ford F-150 could find itself in a bit of trouble because it’s failing to keep up with demand. This isn’t because the Ford F-150 is a bad truck, it’s because too many people want it, but production is lagging behind. 

The 2021 Ford F-150 faces production shortages 

According to CNBC, sales of the Ford F-150 are down by 21% due to the pickup’s supply and production. This decline could be due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Factories have been closed to protect workers, some factories switched from manufacturing trucks to personal protective equipment, and more. 

Sales of the most popular pickup truck have nearly been cut in half as they are down by 45.9% compared to November 2019. Now overall sales have dropped by 21% from last month. This includes a 27.2 decrease in F-Series pickups, including the F-150 and larger options. Ford shares also dropped by 1% in trading on Wednesday.

Is the Ford F-150 in trouble? 

On a positive note for automotive makers, the demand for pickup trucks has remained strong during the ongoing pandemic. So, drivers still really want the new Ford F-150, but inventory has tightened. 

Despite building new vehicles around the clock, Ford closed factories during the first surge of Covid-19 cases. Also, the future remains uncertain in terms of more shutdowns. What happens if a second wave delays production again? 

Ford F-150 inventory continued to tighten as Ford moved through the Q4 changeover to the new 2021 Ford F-150 model. There was a strong sell-down of the 2020 model, but sales have dropped by about 149,931 vehicles. This is about a 40,000 decrease from the previous year. 

But Ford isn’t the only one with declining sales. Honda is down by 23.4%, Hyundai has a 10.6% decrease in sales, and Kia is down by 5.2% compared to November 2019. But it looks like Ford and Honda have the largest declines. 

Is the new F-150 worth buying? 

Yes, the 2021 Ford F-150 is an excellent truck. As more people buy campers and RVs, they will need a reliable truck to haul them. The 2021 Ford F-150 can easily meet that challenge with the best-in-class tow rating of 14,000 lb. 

Even if the average driver doesn’t need to pull that much weight, new trucks are starting to cost about the same as used trucks due to the shortage. The base model for the 2021 Ford F-150 begins around $30,635, which is the first time it’s ever started over $30,000. 

But while doing a quick search, we found 2017 – 2019 Ford F-150 models that were listed between $36,000 to $42,000. None of the options were the base models, but still, those are some really expensive used trucks.
