The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Built in China Will Have Better Range Than the North American Model
There’s been an awful lot of hype and excitement leading up to the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s official debut. This electrified version of the iconic pony car, morphed into a quasi-crossover body, has Mustang fans, critics, and the world buzzing. Everything about this vehicle is innovative.
Americans are champing at the bit to get behind the wheel of Ford’s latest Stang rendition. But you know who else is excited? China. Ford has plans for the new Mustang’s release in the Chinese market as well. However, the overseas version will have a better range.
The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E offers plenty to get excited about
There’s much more to the Mustang Mach-E than the “0-60 thrill” that Ford touts. MotorTrend‘s 2021 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year is also getting a 98.9-kWh battery pack, capable of providing up to 300 miles on a single charge. Plus, expect zero emissions from this pony, and you won’t be compromising on power with its pure EV thrust.
But, of course, expect Mustang-worthy power. Enthusiasts will especially appreciate the GT Performance version, capable of 459 hp.
Also new is the Sync4A infotainment platform, allowing for multiple driver profiles. And there’ll be all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive options, along with a hands-free automated system driving mode.
The Mustang Mach-E offers an impressive range of sizes and battery life
The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s various trim levels determine battery size and available ranges. But even the entry-level Select trim offers 211 to 230 miles of range.
Next in line is the California Route 1 trim. With its rear-wheel-drive, you can expect 300 miles of driving range, along with 290 horses and 317 ft-lb of torque.
The Premium and First Edition offer extended battery ranges between 270 and 300 miles.
The super-powerful GT provides an extended battery version with a 250-mile range.
And, finally, the Performance Edition will go 235 miles on a charge.
The Chinese market might be getting a better Mach-E
Automotive News shared a recent announcement that Ford plans to make the Mustang Mach-E in China, too. But the overseas version will be reworked and manufactured in China through a joint venture with Changan Ford. Chinese consumers can expect to see the Mustang Mach-E at dealerships later this year. But theirs will boast an even more impressive battery range than the North American version built in Mexico. Raising the bar in China’s high-end EV market, Ford says the Mach-E will get an estimated 373-mile range on a single charge. They might get a GT version, too.
Auto Revolution suggests the latest move in China is a smart one for Ford. China is home to the world’s largest car market, and localizing production there is a savvy decision. But Americans might disagree with the idea of another market seeing better battery ranges first. The China-built version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E will also be slightly longer than the North American version. The overseas Mach-E will measure 4,739 mm long and have a 2,984 mm wheelbase.
When can you get yours?
Ford has a rolling schedule for the Mustang Mach-E’s stateside release. The First Edition and Premium models will arrive first with MSRPs of $58,300 and $47,000. Soon thereafter, the Select and California Route 1 models, with price tags of $42,895 and $49,800, should land. This spring, the performance pony, the Mach-E GT, is scheduled to arrive with a starting MSRP of $60,500.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E will be a gamechanger. But time will tell if American consumers embrace it as they have Mustangs past. The Chinese market will also enjoy this new electric pony. And though they’ll enjoy better battery mileage, it won’t likely take any significance away from the Mach-E in the States.
