There are more all-electric vehicles being produced every year. One of the ones that brought quite a bit of attention is the Ford Mustang Mach-E. But we know little about its performance. How well does it do on the road?

To answer that question, MotorTrend has offered their review of the Mustang’s performance as compared to one of its rivals, Tesla’s Model Y. Let’s see what they have to say about how well it performed in their testing, and how it compares to the Tesla model. 

The testing of the Ford Mustang Mach-E 

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s answer to the all-electric vehicle. Purchase price begins at $46,695 for the base version, but the one MotorTrend tested cost them $56,200 after they added all their options. The tester came with the extended range battery, all-wheel drivetrain, and bold red paint. 

The Mach-E is by far not a lightweight vehicle. Put it on a scale, and you’ll find that it weighs 4,807 lbs, which is quite a lot for a vehicle this size. To put it into perspective, MotorTrend used the Ford Explorer three-row version to show the contrast. The Explorer weighs in at 4,367 lbs. That’s almost 500 lbs less than the Mustang Mach-E.

When they took it to their track, the Mach-E took them by surprise. It needed no preconditioning for the battery, nor did it need any type of launch control to get the vehicle going. The reviewers just hit the gas, and it took off with no complaints. 

How well it stood up to the Tesla Model Y

For a 0-to-30 mph run, the Ford Mustang Mach-E managed to squeak out a 1.9-second acceleration time. That clued them in that the Mustang Mach-E would do extremely well, and they weren’t wrong. For the 0-to-60 mph run, it clocked a total of 4.8 seconds. Tesla’s Model Y delivered a time of 4.1 seconds when they tested it on the same track earlier. 

When it came to the quarter-mile test, MotorTrend reviewers found that the Mach-E managed to get a time of 13.4 seconds at 103.5 mph. The Tesla Model Y did a little bit better in their test run. It got 12.4 seconds at 114.8 mph, which gives it a one-second advantage over the Mach-E. 

Tesla came out on top both times, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E pulled out a win of its own when the reviewers tested braking distances. They took the Mach-E through four different test runs, and the best distance it got was 110 feet from 60 mph. By the time the fourth run came, it stopped at 114 feet. Tesla’s best run was 118 feet from 60 mph. 

An overview of the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s performance

The Ford Mustang Mach-E does come up a little short when you compare it with the performance of Tesla’s Model Y. However, it could be due to the extra weight the Mustang has. 

MotorTrend explained that dual motors combined produced about 346 hp. When you factor in the 4,800 lbs weight, it would mean that it would take one horsepower unit to propel 13.9 lbs. Tesla’s Model Y would need 11.3 lbs per hp to propel it down the road. 

As for the way it handled, there were no complaints from the reviewers. One remarked that they were able to feel the extra weight when driving it, but it didn’t affect body motion at all.

The Mach-E’s time for one lap was 26.2 seconds, which is still a second behind Tesla. But there’s no denying that the Mach-E provided a load of fun and thrills for these reviewers.
