What’s new for the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500?
The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are pretty much twins at this point. Only they aren’t identical. They do wear different badges but are becoming increasingly similar in looks and features.
Everything that set the GMC Sierra apart is now available on the Chevy Silverado. For example, the Multi-Pro tailgate that has been available on the Sierra is now available with the Silverado as the multi-flex tailgate.
However, according to AutoBlog, the 2021 GMC Sierra Denali is an exception here. It has a GMC exclusive adaptable ride suspension that noticeably improves the ride and handling. But with lower-trim models, you’re deciding on if the Sierra or Silverado looks better.
2021 GMC Sierra trailering upgrades
The most significant change for the 2021 GMC Sierra includes trailering technology. It now has a trailer length indicator to make changing lanes safer, jack-knife alert, trailer backup guidelines, and a better camera with a rear side view and cargo bed feed.
If you want the diesel, like the Silverado, the Sierra has reduced the price by $995. Plus, the trailer capacity has been increased to 9,300 lb. The maxim towing capacity for the 2,7-liter four-cylinder engine has also been increased by 2,300 lb to 9,200 lb. With the GMC Sierra AT4 trim, you’ll gain a new off-road high clearance step and new Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires.
2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Disappointments
1. The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 has the same old interior.
The Chevy Silverado will have an interior refresh for 2022, so maybe that’s when the Sierra will receive some upgrades too. The seats are wide and comfortable, and the truck has technology for performing truck tasks.
You can stretch out, and the tech is straightforward to use. It’s just outdated, lacks flair, and could be more comfortable. Rivals such as the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 are leading the pack in terms of interior comfort.
All trim levels except the base model come with an 8-inch touch screen. The GMC Sierra does have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can also pay to upgrade for 4G LTE Wifi, wireless phone charging, and extra USB ports.
2. The 2021 GMC Sierra is a little small
AutoBlog notes that the GMC Sierra 1500 has class-leading legroom, but it’s still tight behind a tall driver. The backseat of the Double Cab is mostly suited for occasional use and children. The seats are also upright, which compromises comfort.
But it does not lack strength. The GMC Sierra has the class-leading payload capacity and can carry between 1,500 to 2,250 lb in the bed. You can also upgrade to the CarbonPro Carbon fiber composite bed.
3. The 2021 GMC Sierra has a rough ride
Unless you spend the extra cash for the GMC Sierra Denali trim, driving the Sierra isn’t the best experience. The Denali trim adds active dampers to provide a smoother ride and better body control.
Meanwhile, the standard suspension is lacking. AutoBlog mentioned that when driving other Sierra trims, the ride is punishingly harsh. This could be due to the smaller tires that lower-trim options have compared to the Denali.
