The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Is Here to Remind You of Jeep’s Heritage with These Classic Design Details
Jeep gave us an inside look at the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L earlier this week. Inspired by the Jeep Wagoneer, the Grand Cherokee L may just be the brand’s most luxurious SUV yet. And with that luxury comes some classic design details. After all, Jeep is no stranger to Easter eggs. Discovering them has even become a game for some Jeep lovers. It shouldn’t be all that surprising then to see that the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is taking design cues from Jeep models of the past.
A familiar face leads the way for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
No Jeep model is complete without the brand’s iconic seven-slot grille. First featured on Willy models way back when in 1945, Jeep’s seven-slot grille is unmistakable. As it turns out, though, plenty of things come in sevens for the 2021 Grand Cherokee L. Car and Driver reports there are seven buttons at the top of the Grand Cherokee L’s infotainment screen and seven indentations on the SUV’s rubber brake pedal. The center console lid’s handle also features seven slots. That’s a whole lot of sevens.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L features trapezoidal wheel arches
The Grand Cherokee L features Jeep’s trapezoidal wheel arches too, the very same wheel arches that were first seen on World War II-era Willys. According to Car and Driver, this particular design can actually be seen on all four generations of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
But according to Drive Mag, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s trapezoidal wheel arches aren’t just for looks. As it turns out, when trapezoidal wheel arches were first introduced, they were pretty much a necessity if you planned to go off-roading because they gave the vehicle’s wheels the space needed to tackle off-road trails and rocky obstacles. So, while the Grand Cherokee L’s wheel arches might just be another Jeep Easter egg, they also have an actual purpose.
An American flag that harkens back to the brand’s military roots
Also featured on the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is an American flag. The purpose of this Easter egg is two-fold. While it certainly harkens back to the brand’s military roots, it also pays homage to where the Grand Cherokee L will actually be built. According to Jeep, that will be at the Detroit Assembly Complex in Detroit, MI. Car and Driver reports that Jeep was careful to follow proper flag etiquette too. Much like you see on police cars and other law enforcement vehicles, the flag’s stars and stripes face the vehicle’s front.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s ignition ring takes styling cues from first-generation models
So far, this may be the tiniest Easter egg of all. Take a gander at the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s ignition ring, and you’ll find that its bedazzled crust takes styling cues from the first-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately, unlike first-generation models, you won’t see that bedazzled crust light up when you turn over the SUV’s ignition.
When will the Grand Cherokee L go on sale?
According to the automaker, we won’t be seeing the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in dealerships anytime soon. In fact, you’re going to have to wait until the spring to check out this three-row SUV.
