The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a great compact SUV. It’s fast, luxurious, and includes advanced tech. However, it has one issue that makes it struggle as a family option. Check out what the Mazda CX-5 lacks for families.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is small

According to the AutoBlog, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is small, as it lacks cargo space compared to main rivals. The Mazda CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and only up to 59.6 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The Honda CR-V has 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, with up to 75.8 cubic feet of total cargo space. Also, the Honda CR-V is the leading vehicle in terms of cargo space for this segment.

AutoBlog also mentioned that the 2021 Mazda CX-5 only has enough space for 4 occupants with relative comfort if riding around with cargo for a weekend trip. So, with five kids, you may have to choose between a child and your luggage.

Plus, the Mazda CX-5 has a sloping roof that goes down toward the liftgate. The slanted design may cut into the headspace. According to U.S.News, the Mazda CX-5 is short on legroom for taller passengers. So, how tall are your kids? They might feel cramped in the rear seat.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 does include two complete sets of LATCH connections for the rear outboard seats so that babies can ride along. The middle seat can use lower anchors from either side as well. They noted that the anchors are easy to find and use.

Is the Mazda CX-5 a good SUV for families?

The Mazda CX-5 is an excellent option for smaller families. A couple with younger children could make do with its size. Plus, it does ok on fuel. The estimated fuel economy is 25 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

The Mazda CX-5 has a weak fuel economy compared to competitors. For example, the Honda CR-V gets an estimated 34 mpg on the highway. To get numbers higher than that, consider looking into a hybrid option.

As an IIHS top safety pick +, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is incredibly safe. It also earned a 5-star crash test rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 fun to drive?

Mazdas’ whole thing is providing sporty vehicles that are fun to drive. However, CarandDriver noted that it has a leisurely acceleration. But the standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has a great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights.

The Mazda CX-5 feels faster than it really is, but when trying to pass someone on the freeway, you’ll notice that it feels underpowered. The optional 250 hp engine is noticeably faster and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has precise steering and composed cornering for an exciting ride. Plus, the ride quality is nice and smooth over bumpy roads with a quiet cabin. The luxurious materials used in the cabin also provide refined comfort.
