As shocking as this might be, vans still exist. The pickings are becoming slimmer by the year, and you’ll probably have a better chance of finding a used van than a new one. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t given up, however, and it’s taking the time to update its camper van, the Metris.

MotorTrend reports that Mercedes-Benz has been listening carefully to consumers, and has made some much-needed changes to the 2021 Metris. So what are these changes, and is the Metris something you should consider buying? Here’s what we found out.

Mercedes-Benz listened

Former iterations of the Mercedes-Benz Metris left owners frustrated due to its 5.8-inch central display. Given the price of most Mercedes-Benz vehicles, most owners were disgusted that this was all they got. For owners who live in their Metris, they want a bigger screen than a mere 5.8 inches.

Rather than ignoring the outcry from owners like many other automakers would, Mercedes-Benz chose to listen. The central display was changed out for a 7.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration. The rearview camera was also updated, which was also a source of complaints for some irritated owners. 

Mercedes-Benz didn’t stop there. The German automaker added a digital interior mirror, high gloss black trim for the center console, updated black seat covers, and a new plastic floor covering. 

Driving is more pleasant than ever

Say what you want, but Mercedes-Benz knows how to make driving thrilling. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris will keep its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This will be paired with a new and improved nine-speed automatic transmission. This is backed up by gearshift paddles on the steering wheel which is taking over for the seven-speed unit used on previous models.

The changes don’t end there. If you’ve gotten used to modern safety features like adaptive cruise control, you’ll be thrilled that it’s finally been added to the 2021 Metris. Mercedes-Benz also added in Active Brake Assist, which is great for those situations when you have to back up.

If you’re interested in the van life, the Mercedes-Benz Metris is a great choice. Depending on what state you live in, you might want to wait until COVID-19 is over so you have access to necessary evils like power and water. Once things start to open back up, however, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Will the Mercedes-Benz Metris go electric?

Given the ever-growing popularity of EVs, it only makes sense that some vans will join the electric family. Many automakers including Ford are clamoring to start producing EV vans. With that in mind, those who love the Metris might be wondering if Mercedes-Benz will jump on board.

Mercedes-Benz is working on a electric van, but doesn’t seem to be very enthusiastic about releasing it in the United States. In a statement to MotorTrend, Mercedes-Benz reported, “At this time we cannot communicate any decision here regarding whether we’ll sell an electric version in the U.S., or when.” 

That’s not exactly a no. It’s more like a ‘not yet.’ Given the fact that the German automaker listened about the infotainment system, however, Mercedes-Benz might be willing to go electric if the demand is there. Especially if it means increasing their profits.

It’s unclear at this time how much the 2021 Metris will cost. If it has a similar price to the 2020 model, then it will cost somewhere around $27,180. Again, there’s no way to know that until Mercedes-Benz gives us more information. Still, it sounds like there is a lot to look forward to when the 2021 Metris hits dealerships.
