Since the 2021 S-Class is Mercedes-Benz’s flagship car, it’s only natural that the automaker stuffed it with as many luxury features as possible. For some, though, it’s still not enough. For those customers, Mercedes has Maybach, a name that’s appeared on several upgraded S-Classes in the past. And it’s back for 2021 with the Mercedes-Maybach S580 S-Class.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580 shares some things with the ‘standard’ S-Class

While it isn’t identical to the ‘regular’ 2021 Mercedes S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 is mechanically based on it, Motor Trend reports.

It rides on the same platform, and it has the same powertrain as the ‘base’ S580. Specifically, a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system rated at 496 hp and 516 lb-ft. The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class also has the same 9-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive system, and rear-wheel steering system. Plus, it has all the same safety tech the standard S-Class offers.

However, it’s here where the differences between the two luxury sedans begin to start. Firstly, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s wheelbase is 7” longer than what the long-wheelbase S580 offers, Autoweek reports. It’s also longer overall than the standard S-Class, which requires Maybach-specific doors, Car and Driver reports.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580’s also has a few visual differences compared to the standard S-Class. It has a different grille, model-specific wheels, and some light-up rear-quarter-panel Maybach badges. Plus, there are several hand-painted two-tone paint schemes available which take up to a week to finish, Autoblog reports.

And that’s just the start of the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s features list.

What kind of luxury features does the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class have?

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580’s unique touches over the S-Class continue inside the car. It has a model-specific leather headliner, additional Nappa leather colors, as well as open-pore wood and rose-gold trim, Roadshow reports. Also, those Maybach-specific rear doors? You can now open them electronically from either inside or outside the car, Motor1 reports.

Speaking of seats, the ones in the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class don’t just massage your back and rear, but also your calves, Road & Track reports. They’re also ventilated and heated, which includes the headrests. And the headrests also offer built-in speakers as part of the upgraded Burmester “4D” audio system. Plus, if the leather upholstery’s fragrance isn’t to your liking, Mercedes offers an optional fragrance ionization system for the Maybach S580, Automobile reports.

As in the standard Mercedes-Class, the Maybach S580’s rear passengers get individual displays along with a removable center-console tablet, Roadshow reports. And with the sedan’s infotainment system and WiFi, they can input commands to the front 12.8” OLED display.

But if you want further luxury, there’s the Executive Rear Seat Plus package, The Drive reports. It replaces the rear center seat with an extended center console that houses a chilled compartment with champagne flutes. The package also increases the number of USB-C outlets and adds HDMI inputs, a 12V outlet, and temperature-regulated cupholders.

Pricing and availability

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class launches sometime in mid-2021, MT reports.

Prospective buyers will likely need that time to make sure they have enough cash on hand. As of this writing, Mercedes hasn’t released the Maybach S580’s official pricing. But the current model starts in the $170,000-$180,000 range, Autoweek reports. Though that’s still less expensive than a Rolls-Royce Ghost or a Bentley Flying Spur.
