Set to arrive early in 2021, the newest Porsche Taycan EV is awash with new color and feature options. While these are appealing, the Taycan is a little behind the times in its addition of one feature in particular: a head-up display. Here’s everything you can expect from the 2021 Porsche Taycan, according to MotorTrend.

A (not so) new feature

The 2021 Porsche Taycan’s new head-up display is an exciting feature, but one that many competitors — and even non-luxury brands — have already begun to incorporate. In fact, head-up displays already come standard on some vehicles. Brands that currently offer this feature range from Mercedes-Benz and BMW to Toyota, Kia, and Ford, as well as many others, MotorTrend reports.

A head-up display projects pertinent information directly onto the windshield, with the goal of making it easier for drivers to see data without looking down at a different screen. Often, particularly with luxury brands like Porsche, the driver is able to customize this data to ensure that they are seeing the information most relevant to their needs.

While we’re certainly happy to see that Porsche is finally making this feature available to those who want it, it’s surprising that such a popular luxury brand waited this long before introducing a feature that, at this point, is fairly basic.

What other features does the 2021 Porsche Taycan offer?

Some of the Porsche Taycan’s most convenient new features relate to its charging abilities. Starting with the 2021 model, the Taycan will have a new “Plug & Charge” feature. This should make it significantly easier to charge the Taycan as it eliminates the need for vehicle and driver authentication — all the driver needs to do is plug the vehicle in, and every other step will take care of itself. The Plug & Charge feature should work at Electric America charging stations beginning next year.

The Taycan will also allow drivers to restrict the charge to approximately 200 kW during longer stops. This feature is intended to prolong the vehicle’s battery life, and reduce the amount of power that is lost during charging. 

Additionally, any Taycan that is equipped with an adaptive air suspension has a feature known as Smartlift. Smartlift works directly with your GPS and allows you to identify areas along your regular route where your suspension needs to be raised, such as speed bumps. The Smartlift feature will then automatically raise the Taycan’s suspension when you drive through these areas.

Finally, the 2021 Taycan also features a plethora of new color options — seven, to be exact. Among these are Chalk, Coffee Beige Metallic, and the pink-tinted Frozenberry Metallic. The inside of the Taycan is also customizable, with five different color schemes available to choose from. The standard cabin color scheme will be Black/Limestone Beige, but other available options are Basalt Black/Meranti Brown, Blackberry/Slate Grey, Blackberry, and Graphite Blue/Slate Grey.

The Taycan’s subscription features

In addition to offering many new regular features, the Porsche Taycan will also allow drivers to opt into a monthly subscription program that will allow them to digitally update features even after they have left the dealership. Features available by subscription include lane-keeping assist and InnoDrive, an enhanced cruise control feature that adjusts the vehicle’s driving speed in response to factors such as turns and local speed limits.

While the 2021 Porsche Taycan may have lagged behind the competition in its addition of a head-up display, it’s better late than never. The Taycan’s many other features, as well as its speedy ride and incredibly comfortable interior, mean that this is still a luxury vehicle that’s likely destined to impress.
