The best way to keep a car fresh and exciting is to keep adding new updates, no matter how small. Plenty of Infiniti models are getting unique upgrades for 2021, like enhanced safety features for the QX80 and Q60. The Infiniti QX50 SUV already got those for 2020, but the 2021 model has its own unique additions.

One aspect of a vehicle that many drivers don’t consider is its ability to filter out exterior noise. Excessive noise from the highway and engine can make driving an otherwise good car a terrible experience. Fortunately, lovers of serene drives won’t have to worry about this inside the Infiniti QX50.

Noise-insulating windows

The interior of the Infiniti QX50 already feels like the lap of luxury. Drivers are treated to synthetic leather seats, surrounded by wood trim and many satin-smooth materials. All three rows are plush and comfortable, and even the third-row passengers can recline their seats.

Edmunds has already noted that the Infiniti QX50 is a quiet SUV to drive on the highway. However, Car and Driver was more critical, citing a lot of engine noise while driving around town. The 2021 model will have front windows with insulated glass, which will hopefully cut down some of the engine’s noise.

The Infiniti QX50 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four capable of 268 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a CVT, one of the culprits to blame for the engine’s loud whining. C/D also said that the engine is prone to complaining under heavy throttle.

MotorTrend also agreed that the CVT isn’t doing the QX50 any big favors. The turbo-four is classified as a variable-compression engine, meaning that it can adjust itself for either maximum speed or efficiency. However, in practice, testers found that it doesn’t respond accurately to driver’s inputs or even provide enough power when needed.

Other new features on the 2021 Infiniti QX50

In addition to the noise-canceling front side windows, the base Infiniti QX50 will have a Wi-Fi hotspot and heated front seats. It will also have a few new safety enhancements, like side airbags for the second row and first responder notification. Other standard safety offerings include parking sensors, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, collision warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Luxe model has a new exterior package that allows drivers to complement their SUVs with a darker color scheme. It includes black chrome accents, cabin headliner, and mirror caps, plus new grille mesh. The Luxe trim also receives some extra safety features, like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

Two other advanced safety features, a head-up display and road sign recognition, are included on Essential and Sensory trims. The Sensory trim was just released last year and also included genuine leather seats and 20-inch wheels. The other new trim for 2020, the Autograph edition, is the most expensive QX50 available.

It comes with adaptive headlights and steering, plus a standard towing package for AWD models. This previously optional bundle includes a tow hitch plus receiver, a bigger radiator, and a cool transmission oiler.

Should you buy the 2021 Infiniti QX50?

Despite its engine hiccups, MotorTrend feels that the Infiniti QX50 is a good SUV overall. Testers found the interior to be upscale, and it’s roomy enough to accommodate larger families. 

The QX50 is also one of the best cars in Infiniti’s lineup. Like the Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe, other models don’t live up to standards set by luxury rivals. If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, the 2021 Infiniti QX50 is a good consideration.
