The 2021 Ram 3500 Replaces the Chevy Silverado As Towing King
Our deepest sympathies go out to the 2021 Chevy Silverado 3500HD. It only had a short time in the spotlight. It used to have the best towing capacity until the 2021 Ram 3500 came along to reclaim the title. Check out what this beast of a Ram can do.
The 2021 Ram 3500 is the towing champ
It feels like it was just yesterday when the Chevy Silverado 3500HD came out of the gate swinging. It gained the ability to tow up to 36,000 lb, putting the 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty to shame with its ability to tow up to 35,750 lb. The Ford F-450 Super Duty also maxes out at 37,000 lb.
Meanwhile, the 2019 Ram 3500 sat quietly in the background, with a maximum towing capacity of 35,100 lb. Now the 2021 Ram 3500 gets to take the spotlight because it can tow up to 37,1000 lb with a gooseneck hitch. According to Car and Driver, this is an increase of 2,000 lb over the outgoing model.
The power increase is partly due to the Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter inline-six engine, which now pumps out 1075 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 75 compared to last year’s model. It also provides 400 hp.
It also provides 25 more lb-ft of torque than the Power Stroke turbo-diesel 6.7-liter V8 engine that’s optional with the Ford Super Duty. However, the Power Stroke does pump out 475 hp.
But Ram raised the boost limits with a variable-geometry turbocharger and increased the flow rate in the fuel-delivery system to achieve these numbers. Plus, the rear portion of the Ram’s heavy-duty frame was enhanced, and Ram engineers redesigned the fifth-wheel hitch in house.
Is the Ram 3500 a good truck?
Well, heck yeah. This Ram Truck currently has the best in class torque and towing. It starts around $35,545, and this workhorse can carry a payload of up to 6,840 lb. With strength comes intelligence, too, thanks to smart towing features.
The available power-fold tow mirrors have a 360-degree surround-view camera. Plus, reverse trailer guidance view uses five cameras to build a complete picture of the truck’s surroundings to make aligning your truck and trailer much more convenient.
Plus, the trailer monitoring provides crucial information about your trailer both on and off the road. The trailer tire pressure monitoring system can even provide readings for up to four trailers and 12 tires per each trailer.
Ram 3500 features
With the 2021 Ram 3500, you’ll ride in style with the latest tech. It has the massive 12-inch touchscreen that everyone has been excited about. This is where you can use a split-screen for multiple camera views.
Frame-mounted active tuned mass modules and active noise cancellation in the interior provide a peaceful, quiet cabin too. The 7-inch digital display also provides crucial truck and trailer information while allowing you to keep your eyes on the road.
Available safety features include the class-exclusive adaptive forward lighting system with LED lights. The lamps can turn up to 15 degrees to increase nighttime visibility. Forward collision warning with active braking, adaptive cruise control, and much more are available as well.
