The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is Trying to Make a Comeback
In recent years, the same old Toyota 4Runner has been a little underwhelming. But to remain relevant against the new Ford Bronco and other off-roaders, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner is receiving significant upgrades, including the infamous Trail edition.
The 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and Trail Edition are coming
The Toyota 4Runner hasn’t been redesigned since 2009, with a slight refresh in 2014, but if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. However, the design has been slightly updated to include a new Lunar Rock color.
This color replaces the 2020 army green color for all TRD models. Plus, it now comes with LED lights, and fog lights while the Limited, Nightshade, and TRD Pro trims get LED headlights.

Also, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is getting more durable, more rigid black alloy tires and the Nitto Terra Grappler tires. These new tires simplify the way tweaks can be made to the shocks and how they’re tuned.
The new Toyota 4Runner is also borrowing the 2.5″ Fox Internal Bypass Shocks and TRD tuned springs from the Tacoma TRD Pro to provide a smoother and quieter ride on pavement.
Toyota claims that the 2021 4Runner will have a softer ride at highway speeds, and quicker dampening adjustments to enhance ride quality and control.
The Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition
The Trail edition is the fancy name that Toyota SUVs had for their off-roading editions before they started using ‘TRD Pro.’ This model will most likely be based on the SR5 version with various cosmetic updates.
The 2021 Toyota 4Runner trail edition will come with all-weather mats to keep the interior clean, off-roading tires, a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket, and a 40″ cool on the inside. You’ll be prepared to ride in style.
Literally, you’ll ride in style, because the interior has been updated as well. The Trail edition seats are black with unique green and tan stitching to pop. It has an adventurous feel inside and out.
Pricing for the new 2021 Toyota 4Runner hasn’t been released yet, but it’s safe to expect a slight price increase. The model’s cost of entry currently sits around $37k for the two-wheel 4Runner SR5. The 2021 4Runner TRD Pro currently starts around $50k too. Luckily, there isn’t a long wait for this vehicle. It’s expected to be out by the end of the year.
2021 Toyota 4Runner features
For the 2021 Toyota 4Runner, rear-wheel drive will be standard as four-wheel drive is optional. There are also eight different trim levels:

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner currently has one engine option available, which is the 4.0-liter V6. It delivers 240 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 5,000 lb.
Driver assistance and safety features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assistance, rear-cross traffic alerts, automatic high-beam headlights, and more. The 2021 Toyota 4Runner could come with more features than we’ve mentioned here, but we will have to wait for more updates to be released.
