The 2021 Toyota Sequoia Just Doesn’t Measure up To Its New Competition
The Toyota Sequoia is part of the Japanese automaker’s SUV lineup, nestled between the 4Runner and Land Cruiser. Introduced in 2000, the Toyota Sequoia shares the truck-based design of the Tundra pickup. Nominated for the North American Truck of the Year in 2001, the Sequoia is the largest SUV produced by Toyota.
The three-row SUV has not seen a redesign in more than a decade, and it is starting to show its age. Although roomy and comfortable, the Toyota Sequoia can’t contend with other carmakers that are putting out updated and stylish products. In a crowded market segment, the Sequoia just doesn’t measure up to the competition.

The Toyota Sequoia is in serious need of a substantial update. It is currently in the second generation model, which first appeared in 2008. There was a refresh in 2018 that included enhanced safety features and new trim levels, but there has been no major overhaul in more than 10 years.
The 2021 Sequoia will only see minor changes that include a new Lunar Rock paint color and a Nightshade edition that has a starting price of $61,485.
Toyota hinted that the 2021 model would see a redesign, with exterior styling updates and an interior refresh. It looks like that plan has been pushed back until at least the 2022 model, so for now, it is status quo for the outdated Toyota Sequoia. Motor Trend went as far as to say the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is “now as old as its tree namesake.”
Other vehicles worth taking a look at
U.S. News ranked the Toyota Sequoia 23rd among all other three-row SUVs, giving it a 6.8 out of 10 overall score. In comparison, both the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon received significant upgrades for the 2021 model year. Offering newer technology and improved amenities, these SUVs provide a better overall value.
U.S. News ranks the all-new Tahoe second among large SUVs and third among SUVs with three rows. The fully redesigned vehicle received an 8.3 out of 10 overall score and a class-leading predicted reliability rating. The family-friendly vehicle has plenty of room for both cargo and passengers and offers three powerful engine options.
The GMC Yukon now offers a diesel powertrain as well as two V8 engine options. U.S. News calls the interior design changes a “well-equipped cabin that exudes an upscale vibe.” There is an abundance of high-tech upgrades and, the infotainment system is easy to use, allowing for an enjoyable ride for all passengers.
After a significant overhaul in 2018, the Ford Expedition is considered best in class. It has received numerous industry awards, including the U.S. News Best Large SUV for Families Award. It ranks number one among large SUVs and first in SUVs with three-row seating. U.S. News says that it is “one of the most spacious and modern vehicles in the class.”
The outdated Sequoia just doesn’t make much sense
The 2021 Toyota Sequoia has an MSRP of $51,465 for the base model SR5 trim. Although competitive in pricing with rivals, it just doesn’t make much sense to go with a dinosaur when there are so many newer options available.
Auto Trader was quick to point out that, “The Sequoia has a strong reputation for reliability, but we’d still encourage you to also test-drive a new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, or Ford Expedition. Those rivals are newer, more sophisticated, and more popular choices.”
