Toyota is being such a tease with a new overlanding trailer for the 2021 Toyota Tacoma called the Sport Trailer. The Tacoma Sport Trailer matches the back half of the truck to provide that Tacoma look fans love with even more functionality for overlanding.
But what is overlanding compared to off-roading? Overlanding is a relatively new trend that combines off-roading and camping. You essentially turn your off-road truck or SUV into a camper to go anywhere. Most of the time, a tent is kept on the roof to stay in.
What can the Tacoma Sport Trailer do?
The Sport Trailer helps turn the Toyota Tacoma into an overlanding vehicle by doubling its hauling capacity. It allows you to bring various potential mods such as propane, running hot water, a toilet, and more. Heck, it can even be used to create a glamping experience.
The trailer looks like it could house a tent on top of one sturdy looking rack system. It also looks like the size of the short bed, but it has a custom-fabbed triangular extension with pull-outs to store a freezer.
Plus, the Sport Trailer looks like it has electrical power! You can run the cooler while you’re driving. Once you park, the power will come from a Yamaha generator because Toyota owns a controlling stake in Yamaha. You can park the trailer at your base site and adventure all day before returning to your stored goods.
More overlanding benefits with the Toyota Tacoma SEMA build
According to AutoBlog, we were supposed to receive more details about the Toyota Tacoma SEMA Overlanding concept, but the show is online only this year. It takes place on November 2nd – the 5th, so you may have some catching up to do!
But here is what we know about the Taco Sema build so far, thanks to CNET. A Magnuson supercharger is fitted to the Toyota Tacoma’s 3.5-liter V6 engine for 370 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. This is quite the increase from 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The SEMA concept also has 16-inch Method race wheels, which are known for being extremely durable. They can crash into rocks and other obstacles while staying round.
The wheels are wrapped in 33-inch BF Goodrich km# mud-terrain tires. The standard Tacoma TRD Pro tires are 30-inch, so you’ll have more clearance and better angles.
This truck also has ToyTec Aluma 2.5 series coil-overs for more lift, new upper control arms by Camburg engineering, and CBI Offroad Fabrication rock slides and skid plates. There are a ComeUp wind and rear steel bumper and mounts for a Hi-Lift jack and PowerTank PT10 air compressor.
The Toyota Tacoma SEMA concept has a roof rack with MaxTrax recovery boards and Rotopax external fuel and water storage packs. Plus, there is a Yakima bed rack and tent in the cargo bed. What else could you need?
