The 2022 Ford Fusion Will Fulfill Your Hatchback Dreams
Do you want a new Ford hatchback? Well, you don’t have to for much longer as the 2022 Ford Fusion makes a return. The Ford Fusion Active could fill the gap in your heart that the Fusion sedan, Fiesta, and Focus left.
The 2022 Ford Fusion was spotted
According to MotorAuthority, a new Ford hatchback was captured in spy shots. It’s expected to be the 2022 Ford Fusion, but it’s heavily covered in camouflage. You can only see the outline and tires.
It looks like it has a mid-size shape with a higher ground clearance. The roof also slopes down toward the back and meets a flat end, like a hatchback. The new Fusion almost looks like it adopted the shape of the Prius or Mazda CX-3. Only it could be sportier with its taller ride height.
Rumors suggest that the Ford Fusion Active could be a new soft-roader vehicle. It’s designed to challenge other tall wagons like the Subaru Outback and Buick Regal TourX. Also, Active is the nameplate that Ford uses to sell similar soft-roaders overseas like the Fiesta Active and Focus Active.
What to expect with the Ford Fusion Active
The Ford Focus Active was supposed to be imported from China, but the trade war put an end to that plan. Ford needed to switch gears and focus on trucks, SUVs, and EVs instead of sedans to meet a broader range of vehicle needs.
On previous test models, Ford engineers used a stretched body from the Focus Wagon sold overseas. Its shape can give us major clues as to how the new Fusion will look. However, its underpinnings are expected to be updated to the updated version of Ford’s CD4 platform.
This platform is for mid-size cars and leaves room for front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. This will help Ford expand the number of electric vehicles they plan to offer.
But an alternative option includes the stretched version of the compact C2 platform that was used on older Focus models sold outside of the United States a few years back. That would explain why engineers used a stretched Focus wagon body instead of the larger Fusion-based Mondeo wagon. That wagon is also sold overseas.
When will we learn more about the Ford Fusion?
The new Ford Fusion is expected to arrive toward the end of 2021 as it’s a 2022 model. So hopefully, more updates will roll out by the spring. Until we learn more, we can only speculate about the interior.
There’s no telling about the width of the dash or how it will relate to the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Mustang Mach-E is currently the only vehicle that isn’t a truck, SUV, or van that’s sold in Ford’s North American lineup.
The 2022 Ford Fusion could be an economical option in comparison to offer shoppers more options. Perhaps it can be thought of as the Mach-E light. It should have more power than the Ford EcoSport, but we will see how it compares to the Ford Escape and other mid-size options.
No clues have been revealed about the powertrains, but it’s safe to expect a turbocharged four-cylinder option and perhaps a V6 option, along with a hybrid variant.
