The 2022 Ford Maverick borrows from the Escape
According to Motor 1, the 2022 Ford Maverick may offer a hybrid powertrain, and it may be the same setup that the Ford Escape Hybrid has. Specific details about the hybrid powertrain are still under wraps.
But we do know that the Ford Escape Hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with two eclectic motors to create a combined 200 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. This is a little extra power that we would be happy to see the Maverick receive.
Rumors suggest that the Ford Maverick base model will have the Escape’s 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with 180 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, which is fine. However, it could also get the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 250-hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.
Ford Maverick pickup truck strength
The 2022 Ford Maverick is expected to ride on the same platform as the Ford Escape too. People are calling it the Ford Bronco Sport with a truck bed. But are these vehicles good at doing truck stuff?
With the Ford Bronco Sport, you can tow up to 2,205 pounds. The Ford Escape can also tow up to 3,500 lb when properly equipped. But according to Auto Evolution, the Maverick may only tow up to 1,550 lbs. This is based on the fact that the Ford Courier could only tow up to 1,543 lbs before it was phased out in 2013.
Also, the Ford Maverick is expected to be available with all-wheel-drive like the Ford Escape. AWD has its pros and cons. It provides a smoother ride with car-like handling but can limit suspension travel for off-roading.
How much will the Ford Maverick cost?
The Ford Escape has an MSRP of about $24,885, and the Ford Bronco Sport starts at about $26,820. So, it’s safe to assume that the front-wheel-drive version of the 2022 Ford Maverick will have a similar price.
However, Ford did previously mention that they want to provide a truck that starts around $20,000. But things may have changed. What we do know is that the Ford Maverick is expected to sell about 100,000 units during its first year. Price may vary based on availability and demand.
The Ford Maverick will be manufactured in the assembly plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, where the Ford Bronco Sport is produced. This makes sense because the Sport shares tons of Ford Escape components as well.
But this is a bit worrisome.

The below-average score is a result of previous Ford Escape models struggling with engine, transmission, electrical, body integrity problems, and more. We hope these problems are address before the same parts are placed in the new Ford Maverick.
