Pickup trucks are great. They’re small, able to haul decent sized loads and make fantastic work vehicles. Tragically, the very things that make them great can also be a hindrance. Being small isn’t necessarily that bad, but it is when you’re crammed in between two other people that things start to go downhill. That’s where the Ford Maverick comes in. While previous model years are plagued by the same issues as all pickup trucks, the 2022 model might just change that.

Pickup trucks aren’t known for their comfort

Pickup trucks are fine for two people. Just hop in and go. Add in a third person, and things get uncomfortable quick, especially for the person sitting in the middle. Not only are they sitting in the most uncomfortable seat, but they have to crawl in to get there. 

For long road trips, it’s a real pain, especially for adults. It’s definitely not suitable for growing families. Ford might be about to change that, however with the Ford Maverick.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is growing

It’s highly likely that the 2022 Ford Maverick will get a SuperCab similar to what is offered on the F-150, which Car and Driver is a big fan of. This will add a second row to the Maverick and two more doors. It’s not exactly huge, but for passengers who would normally be stuck in the middle, it’s a lifesaver. 

The two rear doors are shockingly full size. Most SuperCabs offer rear swing doors, but recent photos of the 2022 Maverick reveal rear doors just as large as the doors on the front. This is a very pleasant surprise for anyone interested in buying the Maverick.

This configuration allows for six passengers. It might be cramped, though, so don’t be surprised if tall passengers have trouble getting back there. 

This comes at a cost, unfortunately. The bed is much smaller than anticipated even for a pickup. MotorTrend thinks that Ford will manage a workaround for this by taking a page out of the Honda Ridgeline’s playbook by adding in a cargo box and an under-floor trunk.

The interior is decent

According to MotorTrend, the interior is pretty much on par with all pickup trucks. The review site stated, “Expect few curves and plenty of hard angles, as well as large knobs for the climate controls and basic stereo functions, plenty of large storage cubbies, and even the possibility of a three-across front seating arrangement (with the option for individual front buckets).”

MotorTrend also thinks that Ford will allow buyers the option of removing the rear bench. This will allow more room for things like tools, groceries, and other goods.

There is some tech, although how much we don’t know yet. There is definitely a decent-sized infotainment screen as well as physical buttons to press for those who aren’t fond of touchscreens.

The steering wheel appears to have a kicking mustang badge in the center, which looks very cool. In general, it looks like Ford didn’t fudge on the quality. The seats also appear to be two-tone in the photo obtained by MotorTrend.

The Ford Maverick isn’t expected to hit car dealership floors until early 2022, so we’ll have to wait to get more details. Until then, we’re trying to piece together the details from spy shots. It remains questionable as to how cool the 2022 Maverick will be, but having another pickup truck to choose from is definitely a benefit.
