The 2022 Ford Raptor is Finally Getting a V8
Fans of the Ford Raptor can rejoice. The 2022 Ford Raptor is finally gaining a V8 engine. But will this beefy Ford pickup truck have more power than the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX? Also, having to wait until 2022 to drive it is a bummer.
The 2022 Ford Raptor gains V8 power
According to Torque News, the Ford Raptor is gaining a supercharged V8 engine to tackle rivals like the Ram 1500 TRX. Currently, the Ford Raptor has a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 under the hood that pumps out 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.
This is a great amount of power for a regular truck, but not a super truck! The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. This leaves the Raptor in the dust.
But to catch up to the TRX, the 2022 Ford Raptor will gain the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that’s used in the Ford Mustang GT500 to pump out 750 to 770 hp. However, the Raptor will be heavier than the Mustang, so it may not achieve 750 hp. We will have to wait and see what the Raptor can do when it emerges in 2022.
What else do we know about the new Raptor?
The Ford Raptor is thinking about the future, and it’s no secret that emission standards are rising. Heck, Japan even promises no internal combustion engines (ICE) after 2030. So, the 2022 Ford Raptor will offer another engine option.
Instead of the 5.2-liter V8 engine, buyers can opt for a version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine that will be linked to a hybrid engine. This will create the Ford Raptor Hybrid. But there is currently no speculation on how much hybrid power it will have.
Currently, the Ram 1500 TRX is only offered with a single engine option. Ram doesn’t even offer a hybrid version of any of its trucks. There is the hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which is a good start, though.
Plus, having more than one engine option may provide buyers with a cheaper option. The 2021 Ram TRX begins around $69,995. The 2020 Ford Raptor starts around $53,455. Both are pretty darn expensive. Currently, there is no telling how much both versions of the new Raptor will cost.
What about the 2021 Ford Raptor?
The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor might not be a thing. Ford has been focusing on a refreshed F-150 for 2021. But we can look at clues from the F-150 to get an idea of what to expect with the 2022 Raptor.
For example, the interior of the F-150 just received some significant improvements. For example, there are new max recline seats that almost fold flat for napping. This could be great if you get tuckered out after off-roading all day.
The Raptor should inherit new tech from the F-150, too, including the larger, horizontal 12-inch infotainment touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-fi hotspot should come standard.
In terms of safety, it’s not crazy to expect standard features such as forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Available features may include lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert.
