The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Has a Serious Identity Crisis
EV? Giant SUV? A bazillion horsepower? Truck bed? Yep, that’s all the buzzwords I can think of that should grab the modern motoring world’s attention. Things are happening fast, but with all this incredible technology, automakers are set on messing up vehicles with tons of potential by making every vehicle do everything. That being said, the Hummer is back! But, somehow, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV might make less sense than the older ones.
The 2022 GMC Hummer has literally every feature
As everyone scrambles to cover the new EV Hummer, it has become abundantly clear that GM overstacked the deck on this one. GM gave the Hummer 1,000 hp. I’ve said it before, and I feel as though I will say many more times, but why does anything need 1,000 hp? It’s asinine. More to the point, why would a vehicle (supposedly) for going off-road need 1,000 hp?
GM says the Hummer has 11,500 lb-ft of torque… I’m sorry, but no, GM. No, it doesn’t. Car and Driver posit that number must be coming from the truck’s gear ratio’s compounding effects. It’s an annoying and misleading number, but the fact they felt the need to post such an absurd number is closer to the point that this truck makes no sense.
The Hummer EV is too fast
I really want to drive the point home that the Hummer EV is faster than most sports cars. According to Road & Track, the massive Hummer EV will do 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. I’m sorry, but that is faster than most Porsche 911s, a Ferrari 458, a BMW M4, and so on. Frankly, there are plenty of legitimate race cars that have slower acceleration than the new Hummer EV. Come on, man! That. Is. Silly. Ok, I’m moving on.
Driving features and off-road doo dads
GM has been talking for a while about the 2022 GMC Hummer EV’s CrabWalk feature. This is yet another step that feels like a little too much. The hummer will have the moon landeresque ability to turn all four wheels and drive sideways or diagonally. I’m not saying this isn’t cool; it’s just that with everything else, it feels like too much.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is starting to feel like a Ginsu knife commercial, “But wait, there’s more!” The Hummer is not only a ripping super truck and moon lander; it is also a Jeep Gladiator. GM threw a little teeny pickup bed on the back for – reasons – and added removable roof panels. It truly feels like GM said, “What is every cool feature from every car and space machine ever? We’ll just do them all.”
The Hummer EV interior follows suit
One of the few details we had about the Hummer EV before the official release was that the Unreal Engine would power the infotainment. This system has been used to design many popular video games like Fortnite and Rocket League. So yeah, it probably does video games, too.
The only feature that actually makes any sense
GM did incorporate one buzzy feature to this truck that actually makes good sense. Since the Hummer is an EV, they thankfully gave it a killer battery and charging system. Road & Track reports the new Hummer is built on GM’s new Ultium electric platform. This system uses new batteries developed with GM partner LG Chem to give the Hummer a 350-mile range.
The most exciting feature involving the EV system is the promise of a 100-mile range in only 10 minutes of charging.
If you want the first run, you’re going to have to pay
GM says the base model will start around $80,000, but that one isn’t available yet. The first run of the GMC Hummer EV is called the “Edition 1,” and it starts at $112,595.
I truly don’t see who the Hummer EV is for. The absurd power, unending contradictory features list, and weird Jeep similarities make the Hummer look deeply confused.
