The 2022 Hummer EV Has Misleading Specs
Before you get wrapped up in how epic the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is, take a deep breath and prepare for actual specs. GMC is currently marketing the new Hummer EV with a few figures that could be misleading.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is misleading
Before you feel impressed about the 2022 Hummer EV and it’s 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, know that this number may not be accurate. According to CNET, GMC could be using different specifications.
GMC’s massive torque figure could be corresponding to wheel torque, which is traditional motor torque that’s multiplied through the transmission’s drive ratio. We aren’t used to that figure, but GMC isn’t the first auto manufacturer to release spaces this way.
The Tesla Roadster 2.0 claims to produce over 7,000 lb-ft of torque. Also, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon produces 972 Newton-meters of engine torque (770 lb-ft), but when multiplied through gear ratios, you get 14,000 Nm of wheel torque (10,325 lb-ft).
GMC claims that they will release the SAE-specific torque number closer to the release date. Until then, CarandDriver suggests that the Hummer EV really has a torque number between 715 to 834 lb-ft of torque.
This number is based on the light-duty Chevy Silverado’s gear ratios. They range from 13.8 to 16.1. Canard Driver also took the engine, transmission, and final drive options into consideration.
Your 2022 GMC Hummer EV won’t have that much power
Only the 2022 GMC Hummer Edition 1, which is the launch edition, has 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Each other trim level has less power, and to make matters worse, the launch edition is already sold out.
Currently, the 2nd most powerful trim option includes the GMC Hummer EV3X, and it will arrive in fall 2022. So, that’s only about a 1-year wait for the second most powerful model. It will have 800 hp and 9,500 lb-ft of torque.
The Hummer EV3X will also only have a 300-mile range, while the Edition 1 has a 350-mile range. It doesn’t get the Watts to Freedom (WTF) feature either. But it does get torque vectoring with the rear duel motors. It has a starting price of around $99,995.
Is the 2022 Hummer EV good for off-roading?
We aren’t sure if the 2022 GMC Hummer is good for off-roading yet. But currently, the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 has the best off-roading equipment. Hopefully, the Edition 1 features for off-roading will be added to the EV3X.
The adaptive air suspension does allow you to raise the cab by 6-inches to clear obstacles. The Extract Mode is the feature used to raise the suspension.
Also, the Crab Mode allows the truck to move from side to side, like a crab. The dual rear motors can lock their speeds to be equal with the mechanical locking differential in the front too.
It has full underbody armor, 4-wheel steering for nimble maneuverability, and removable roof panels. You should be able to connect with nature and travel anywhere, but we will remain skeptical until we learn more about it.
