The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Got a Hot New Look
Wow, you might have to take off your sunglasses to take a peek at the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. It got a brand new look to compete against rival compact SUVs like the best selling Chevy Trailblazer. But will that be enough to help Mitsubishi get more sales?
The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross got a new look
Mitsubishi recently announced that it will be updating its entire vehicle lineup by the second quarter of 2021. Even the Mitsubishi Mirage will receive a new do. But so far, all we’ve seen is the teaser image of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
The Eclipse Cross is a small, sporty SUV that carries the legacy of the Eclipse coupe. Now the legacy lives on with a new exterior design and a totally redesigned interior. Do you like what you see so far?
2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross exterior updates
Based on the photo, we can see that the Eclipse Cross has prominent, angular chrome pieces that extend beneath the headlights to frame the grille and new lower bumper shape. The headlights may have a unique shape with LEDs. The bumper may have new LED running daylights too.
The sculpted shape of the sides and majority of the rock panel design seem pretty much the same, but the rear of the vehicle looks slightly different with a more pronounced protruding shape. The taillights and angular liftgate still look similar to the old look.
But hopefully, the taillights are no longer connected with a horizontal lighting element that bisects the rate windscreen. We can also hope for a new modern LED design, and maybe more chrome is used to accent the rear.
We can spot new five-spoke restyled wheels on this image, but it’s unclear if the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will have new wheel designs. It could carry over the same wheels from the last model.
One wild theory is that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is based on the 2017 Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept that was introduced at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. It would be exciting to see a new robust, compact hybrid emerge.
What else is new for the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?
We know that the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will have a brand new interior, but we haven’t seen it. Mitsubishi did promise fans a revised interior with a new infotainment system, so we can speculate that the small SUV will have a design that’s better suited for tech and driver assistance features.
According to Motor1, all Mitsubishi models will come with forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection and more standard safety features. However, the Eclipse Cross and other models should have had these features already. It feels like Mitsubishi is playing catch up.
To catch up, the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will need more power. The 2020 model only comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 152 hp. Other compact options, like the Mazda CX-5, offer more powerful engine options.
Also, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is supposedly gaining an improved combustion engine and more electric range. Perhaps this technology will be provided to other models too. If Mitsubishi sticks to their timeline, we will know more by the second quarter of 2021.
