Oh, Toyota. We love you so much, but you have routinely broken our hearts time and time again. The 4Runner and Seqiouas are sweet, but they keep getting more out of date, and the prices keep going up. The Supra is simply a BMW Z4 in a different wrapper. Toyota, we need to be dazzled by the 2022 Toyota Tundra that will supposedly be a “world-beater,” whatever that means. 

It is no secret that the Toyota Tundra has fallen far from grace in the truck world. What was once a class-leader in nearly everything, the Tundra hasn’t been updated in any significant way in about a decade or so. It is well past time for Toyota to do a major overhaul of the once-beloved truck and set it back in its place of glory in the Pantheon of pickups.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra finally getting an update?

 According to Motor1, Toyota dealers are getting very excited about the new Tundra. As the buzzing from dealers might suggest, the third-generation Tundra could be quite the truck. I’ll be honest, dear reader, I’m not holding my breath just yet. 

During an interview with Automotive News, Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council Chairman Robby Findlay said that this new generation Tundra is the most exciting thing they’ve had in years. He says that dealers (along with consumers) have been waiting for this new model for a long time. 

How many Toyota Tundras were sold in 2020? 

Along with everything else last year, car sales were unpredictable and dramatic. That being said, full-size pickups had a pretty solid year; however, the Tundra did not. Toyota reports that for 2020 only a little over 109,000 Tundras were sold. This represents a two percent drop from the previous year. The Tundra finished just above the worst-selling truck of the year, the Nissan Titan.

Toyota needs to get back into the full-size truck game because there’s gold in them hills. If anyone needed further proof that having a popular full-size truck is a great play in America, the three top-selling models for 2020 were all full-size trucks. 

What do we know about the new Toyota?

Not much other than a lot of hype from Finally. He states that “From everything that they’re telling us, we’re going to have best in class. I mean, we’re going to have a world-beater, and it’s going to be fun to really go toe-to-toe with the domestic trucks.”

All we know for sure right now is that Toyota plans to introduce the third-generation Tundra sometime in December of 2021. Other details include that it might be on the TNGA-F platform and powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine. 

This is all very exciting and sounds super cool, but claiming something like “world-beater” might be a bit bold considering what other models it will be up against. 2022 is gonna be a fat year for pickup trucks. Against the new V8 Raptor, the V8 Gladiator, and assuming the Ram TRX isn’t done being rad, the Tundra is going to be wadding into some deep and crowed waters.
