The Toyota Tundra has been praised as one of the best pickup trucks ever made. But after over a decade without any significant upgrades or changes of any kind, love for the Tundra Began to wane. Now that the 2022 Toyota Tundra is coming with all new everything, fans of the truck are excited once more. Since durability is kind of Toyota’s thing, it begs the question; will the 2022 Toyota Tundra be the best pickup truck for overlanding adventure rigs?

What’s new for the 2022 Toyota Tundra?

The 4.7-liter heart of the Tundra has served the truck well for a long time. This indestructible engine has powered many 1-million-mile trucks over the years. However, that monster V8 wasn’t the most fuel-efficient, and with gas prices what they are, the 4.7-liter needed a bit of modernization.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra got the new twin-turbo V6 that is also in the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser. Before we bellyache about a V6, this bad boy makes 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Along with the Land Cruiser’s engine, the new Tundra also got the Land cruiser’s badass chassis. The only overlanding rig that could compete with a Tundra would probably be the Land Cruiser, but now they share so many of the same parts that both are now impossible to beat.

What makes the Tundra the best pickup truck for overlanding?

According to Expedition Portal, the Tundra is a great off-roader in any configuration, but not all of them are the best for overlanding. The Tundra really needs to be set up in a specific way to claim the best pickup truck for overlanding.

For example, the SR5 can be set up with the TRD package (including a rear locker) and maintain up to a 1,885-pound payload. The most capable model, the TRD Pro, has a payload set 285 pounds lighter at 1,600 pounds.

If the goal is to install a lightweight camper, then the SR5 is the way to go. This proves that just picking the most powerful or most expensive rig isn’t always the best option. Overlanding is a specific task that needs specific gear.

The addition of the rear locker is a major upgrade that sends the 2022 Tundra into a whole new realm of overlanding capability. Also, the new truck has a mode for rock crawling that keeps the powerful engine from shredding tires. It softens the accelerator that makes rock crawling possible for any level of driver.

Even on-road the Tundra is better

Unlike the old Tundra, the 2022 model actually feels civilized on the road. The new chassis, sway bars, and upgraded suspension mean the Tundra doesn’t feel like your driving a log down the road. Also, the steering has variable weighting now, giving it a light feel on the trail and in parking lots but a firmer and more direct weight on the highway. All of these little things add up to make a truck that drives less like a truck on the highway and more like a truck on the trail.

The Tundra is the best pickup truck for overlanding

Aside from the updated engine, Toyota finally – after years of irritation from the customers – gave strength back to the world’s best truck. Now it has a real claim to being the best pickup truck for overlanding—way to go, Toyota.
