For most of us, the terms “comfortable, practical family car” and “supercar” don’t exist in the same universe. Especially when that supercar has a nearly $2 million sticker price. Swedish sports car manufacturer Koenigsegg has produced its first-ever high-performance vehicle that seats four people. The automaker touts it as “family-friendly.”

According to Koenigsegg, the Gemera supercar has a “spacious and practical interior.” But how else is it family-friendly?

The Koenigsegg Gemera is a powerful hybrid

CEO and founder Christian von Koenigsegg recently said in a statement that ultimate performance was once limited to the world of two-seaters. The new Gemera supercar, he explained, is perfect for “family trips in comfort, style, and safety, with never-before-experienced performance.”

Koenigsegg unveiled the Gemera earlier in 2020. Only 300 will be made, and each will cost about $1.9 million, the BBC reported. Sure, the new supercar can seat four adults in comfort and offers cargo space for luggage. But it’s still all about performance. 

It’s a hybrid. Seriously, it has a 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine along with three plug-in electric motors. The Gemera can get up to 1,700 hp.

According to CNBC, the Gemera can reach 62 mph in just 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of 248 mph. OK, maybe that doesn’t sound so family-friendly. Its 590-mile range in hybrid mode might make it more appealing for a family car. That would be helpful on a trip.

The good and the bad

When you think of a family-friendly car, you’re usually not considering an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, Ferrari GTC4 Lusso, or Bentley Continental Supersports, all of which can exceed 200 mph. All of them can also seat four people.

But is a high-performing niche car from an automaker known for super-high horsepower V8s really what you want in a family car?

High performance aside, in the plus column, the Gemera has enough room for two adults in the back, so it would work for a small family. The touchscreen in the back is bound to be a hit as far as infotainment. It looks like a race car, and we can’t imagine a kid who wouldn’t think that was cool.

As for the cons, there’s safety to consider in a supercar. The cost of ownership is a big issue. How easy would it be to get parts or repairs? How much would those cost? 

Even though it has a futuristic camera-based side-view setup, the Gemera’s side mirrors might be illegal in the United States, MotorTrend reported.

There’s also insuring the vehicle. Nothing about the Gemera is budget-friendly. 

Finally, though the Gemera seats four, it has just two doors that open by sliding forward. The good news is they’re big enough that you won’t need to move the front seats to climb in or out of the back. 

The bad news: If your family includes children who can get themselves out of a car seat or seatbelt, the minute you open those doors, you better be ready. At least in a sedan, you have a moment to gather yourself before you get the kids out of the back. The doors in the Gemera clear the backseat first.

So, is it really family-friendly?

The Gemera is Koenigsegg’s first all-wheel-drive model. It offers all-wheel-steering and torque vectoring, too, according to Car and Driver. The front wheels are powered by their own electric motor on a crankshaft that gets 395 hp. Two other electric motors power the back wheels.

Inside, you’ll find high-end touches. The first of two infotainment screens sits at the center of the dashboard. There’s also a family-friendly screen for backseat passengers. The heated seats use memory foam for a sublime ride, and the 11-speaker audio system offers immersive sound. Finally, there are a whopping eight cup holders — four that cool and four that are heated.

The 2021 Koenigsegg Gemera has a lot going for it as a four-seat supercar.  But is it family-friendly? Not so much.
