The 4 Most Reliable Used Full-Size American Pickup Trucks—According to J.D. Power
The full-size American pickup truck is one of the most reliable vehicles around. But even among the Detroit Three, there are several standout model years of used trucks. U.S. News cross-referenced its original overall review scores with J.D. Power‘s reliability ratings to rank the absolute best used American pickup trucks. Here are the top four:
- 4th – 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
- 3rd – 2018 Ram 1500
- 2nd – 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 1st- 2019 Ford F-150
4th – 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
A used GMC Sierra 1500 is a great choice for a reliable full-size American pickup truck. Why 2018? Because this was the first year with standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a rearview camera.
U.S. News originally granted this truck an 8.4/10 overall score. It noted that even for a full-size truck, the Sierra wasn’t great in the twisties. But its ride on straight roads was unbeatable, and its crew cab offered plenty of space for the whole family. J.D. Power gave it a respectable 82/100 for predicted reliability–across all powertrain options. Some 2018 Sierra 1500s even boast a 12,500-pound towing capacity.

3rd – 2018 Ram 1500
The 2018 Ram 1500 offers excellent value on the used half-ton truck market. Why? Because in 2019, Ram rolled out the fifth generation of its 1500, but most of the changes were visual. What this means is that the 2018 Ram 1500’s “dated” looks keep this reliable full-size American pickup truck’s used prices low. But buyers in the know understand that the 2018 Ram 1500 offers a mostly modern drivetrain.
The 2018 Ram’s drivetrain includes the current eight-speed automatic transmission, rear coil springs, and the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8. In fact, the only major feature not offered in 2018 was the complex eTorque mild hybrid system. This may be why J.D. Power awarded the 2018 Ram 1500 an 83/100 for predicted reliability. U.S. News loved its smooth ride and handling and gave it an 8.6/10.

2nd – 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The final two full-size used American pickup truck brands tied for predicted reliability scores, though they got different overall scores. The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers all the same powertrain options as the GMC Sierra 1500 and sleeker styling to appeal to fans of Chevy muscle. 2018 was the final year of the Silverado’s third generation.
U.S. News was especially taken by the truck’s infotainment screen with easy-to-navigate controls. Back in 2018, Chevrolet even offered a mild-hybrid powertrain that featured a 5.3-liter V8. But if you are shopping 2018 Silverados, you have many powertrains and configurations to choose from. J.D. Power gave the Silverado a predicted reliability score of 86/100.
1st – 2019 Ford F-150
You might not be surprised to see the Ford F-150–often called America’s favorite truck–at the top of U.S. News’ used full-size pickup list. The Blue Oval is infamous for updating its F-series trucks every few years. That makes the 2019 Ford F-150 the second-to-last-year of the truck’s thirteenth generation. So why 2019? This was the first model year that Ford made forward collision warnings/automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection a standard feature for all F-150s–years ahead of some of its rivals.
The 13th generation F-150 was also 750 pounds lighter than previous F-150 trucks, and the light weight improves every aspect of performance. The 2019 F-150 tied the 2018 Silverado’s 86/100 predicted reliability score but takes first place with an overall review score of 8.8/10.
