Just when you were thinking the Porsche 911 lineup couldn’t get any more exciting for 2020, it does. Porsche has officially revealed the 2021 911 Targa 4 and 4S models and as you would expect, they are more extravagant looking than ever. 

What makes the 911 Targa so cool?

The most notable characteristic of the Targa remains its futuristic, completely automatic roof that can now be opened and closed in only 19 seconds at the push of a button. The new Targa also features the same wraparound rear window that was first introduced in 1965. Its sloping body shape, signature bulbous lights, and sharp edges make it easily identifiable even in the largest of crowds and helps it stand out from the competition.

For added flair, the Targa also has a wider rear spoiler and stylized wheels.  What continues to make the Targa so dynamic is that it is customizable and can appeal to a variety of enthusiasts. 

Power and capability 

Porsche became a household name thanks to its signature offerings of dynamic power, luxury, and agility. Similar to the 911 Carrera models, Porsche has given the new 911 Targa models a bigger power boost with enhanced turbocharged three-liter six-cylinder boxer engines mated with an eight-speed transmission. However, you can opt for a seven-speed transmission on the 4S model if you would like.

The new Targa 4 model generates a 379 horsepower and has 331 pound-feet of torque and the 4S boasts a 443-hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Both options are high-performers but still versatile enough to be considered as satisfying everyday drivers. 

Rear-wheel drive comes standard on both of the new Targa variants but all-wheel drive is available for bettered performance. With Porsche’s Sport Chrono Package, the Targa 4 can go from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds and gets a max speed of 179 mph; the 4S can go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds can reach a max speed of 88 mph with the Sports Chrono Package.

On the inside

Fortunately, Porsche doesn’t sacrifice comfort for enhanced performance. The carmaker has extended its understated, yet upscale interior design to the new Targa models. What’s actually pretty funny is that the new Targa cabin feature that enthusiasts are getting excited about has nothing to do with its digital gauge or infotainment. Instead, enthusiasts are excited that the Targa finally offers a large cupholder in the center. In the past, many drivers have complained that the Porsche cupholders are generally useless.

But as far as Porsche’s infotainment goes, it’s relatively satisfying and easy to use. The new 911 models come with a 10.9-inch touchscreen and the infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. There’s also an available option to add on a 12-speaker Bose sound system as well as a 13-speaker Burmester system.

Safety

The 2021 Porche 911 lineup hasn’t been officially crash-tested yet but the new models do offer a variety of advanced safety features that come standard including forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning are available.

Pricing

The new Targa models are expected to arrive at dealerships later this year. The Targa 4 starts at $120,650 and the 4S model starts at $136,550
