Some may think station wagons are obsolete, but there are still a few outstanding popular models. The Audi A6 is a luxury sedan, but it’s also available as a modern station wagon. According to MotorTrend, the 2021 Audi A6 Allroad is just as capable as an SUV.

The Audi A6 Allroad first debuted for the 2019 model year in Europe, but its ensuing popularity demanded a release stateside. The high-powered Audi RS6 wagon also finally got a U.S. release this year, but it’s far from practical. The Audi A6 Allroad has a much cheaper price tag, plus several other strengths.

Excellent design

Modern station wagons definitely look cooler nowadays, both inside and out. The Audi A6 Allroad looks almost identical to the regular A6 with a few other unique elements. It comes with big 20-inch wheels that complement its higher ride height. Granted, it’s just a slight lift, but many drivers will appreciate the vantage point when hazardous weather hits.

The 2021 Audi A6 Allroad also has roof rails and a new set of bumpers, plus durable cladding for the lower body. This material helps protect the car from getting scratched by dirt and other debris. A Black Optic appearance package is also new for this year, which adds on some black exterior trim. While the outside of the car might be ready for rough conditions, luxury awaits on the inside.

It has what you’d expect from an Audi, like plush leather upholstery and real wood on the dash. The standard leather seats are comfortable enough on their own, but heating and ventilation are available. Other nice extras include soft-closing doors and heating for the second-row seats.

MotorTrend was also impressed at the technology inside the Audi A6 Allroad. A large dual-screen infotainment system is standard, with one screen controlling audio settings and the other managing comfort controls. Testers found that the bottom screen was a little frustrating to operate, especially when trying to drive. Still, it comes with plenty of useful features, including smartphone integration and navigation.

The Audi A6 Allroad is great to drive

The Audi A6 Allroad has a 3.0-liter turbo V6 that makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with standard all-wheel-drive plus a seven-speed automatic transmission. It provides plenty of power for daily driving, but MotorTrend testers heard the engine struggle at higher speeds.

Still, the wagon handles itself well around corners, and the steering is light enough for easy maneuvering. Ride quality is smooth thanks to the standard adjustable air suspension.

Plenty of cargo space

The regular Audi A6 could definitely use some extra cargo room. It only has around 14 cubic space in its trunk, which is lower than average. On the other hand, the A6 Allroad has 30 cubic feet of available space with the rear seats folded. 

With both passenger rows flat, it has nearly 64 cubic feet of space, which is great for a wagon. One of its competitors, the Volvo V90 Cross Country wagon, only has a maximum cargo area of 54 cubic feet.

A few minor downsides to the Audi A6 Allroad

As you’d expect from a wagon, the 2021 Audi A6 Allroad doesn’t get great mileage. It’s only rated for 22 mpg combined city/highway, but it earns a satisfactory 26 mpg on highway roads. Still, most compact SUVs are far less thirsty for fuel.

The A6 wagon may be cheaper than the RS6 version, but it’s still not very affordable. It costs almost $67,000 to start, with options pushing it into $70,000 territory. Still, if you’re looking for a functional and stylish luxury wagon, the Audi A6 Allroad is one of your best options.
