The new car mania that has propelled car sales the past few years has left the building. In its wake are surplus cars and trucks. The reasons are many: Factory pushes and rebates to dealers cause a buildup of one particular vehicle, a particular model is less popular to buyers or maybe it has fewer options. Maybe buyers know a new 2020 model is just around the corner and want the latest and greatest.

They scoured computer inventories and found four percent of vehicles on lots are new 2018 models. “But that’s almost like a needle in a haystack,” you may say. True. But these aren’t a sprinkle of vehicles here and there. These are specific makes and models that for whatever reason are proportionally seeing much higher inventories than other models. 

These cars aren’t turkeys. They are just new vehicles that are more apt to be lurking around dealerships waiting for you to release them from their new-car smell.

1. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

See, we told you this list wasn’t full of turkeys. These Unlimited models are the highest level of 2018 inventories overall, at almost 20%. That means 20% of 2018 vehicles languishing on new car dealer lots will be Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models. Expect to see $8-10,000 off of MSRP.

2. Jeep Wrangler

Scoring right behind with almost 17% are Jeep Wranglers. So combined these two Wrangler models represent almost 30% of all new 2018 models. Wrangler was new in 2018 but too many were produced. Here’s a golden opportunity to possibly get a current-looking Wrangler for a used Wrangler price.

3. Porsche Macan

This is one of Porsche’s most popular models, and overall they’ve built close to 400,000 worldwide. But they’re expensive, and maybe that’s the reason they come in at over 15%. It’s the only Porsche in the top 10 list.

4. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

If you’ve been thinking about a crossover, there’s nothing wrong with the Eclipse Cross. Some forget there is still a Mitsubishi in the US. There isn’t much to make it stand out in a crowd, but the economy is decent.

5. Dodge Durango

As Dodge’s product line continues to age, people forget they still sell an SUV. Over 12% of 2018 vehicles are Durangos. With both two- and three-row seating, it offers a lot of variables for SUV fans.

6. Chrysler Pacifica

Minivans are still popular with a core group of people, but the ranks are getting thinner. One of the newest minivans is the Pacifica. About 10% of this group are Pacificas. Don’t forget you can get one with all-wheel-drive if that’s what’s left on the lot.

7. Chevy Malibu

As GM continues to whittle down their sedan offerings, many forget these are still competitive products for a mid-size sedan. There might even be a few hybrids that get almost 50 mpg on the highway.

8. Ford Ecosport

Reviews have not been kind to the Ecosport, especially when it comes to the anemic engine and so-so mileage. But as a little commuter, it handles and rides out fairly comfortably.

9. Jeep Compass

The Compass carries the Jeep ruggedness well. You can also still get a manual trans which might be what’s on the lot. Many are loaded with lots of nice features.

10. Kia Optima

The Optima rates fairly high in the mid-size sedan class, so if you’re in the market for something in that class, or if you’re thinking about a 2019 or 2020 Optima, this may be your best, cheapest opportunity.
