Heavy-duty options are there to tackle tough jobs. But even as the pickup truck market has remarkably changed, America’s best-selling truck is still the same. 

The best-selling truck of 2020

No surprise here, the Ford F-150 is once again the best-selling truck of the year. Some may wonder if the F-150 gets too much respect, and that’s a valid question. But even so, numbers don’t lie.

The F-150 has been the best-selling truck for the last 43 years. And even as the ongoing pandemic has heavily impacted the auto industry, Ford still managed to achieve added success with its F-150. According to recent U.S. sales figures, as documented by GoodCarBadCar, Ford sold 221,647 F-Series models by the end of Q3 2020. That’s a 3.5 percent increase compared to this time last year.

Why the F-150 continues to dominate 

While the 2020 F-150 faces steep competition, there’s a lot to love about this truck. With six different trim levels and six engine choices ranging from 250-450 horsepower, the F-150 offers something for everyone. Ford made the F-150 more attractive this year with a newly standard 10-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the automaker expanded the optional engines on the lower trim levels.

That said, if you want to keep things simple, stick with the regular cab model. Those who want something efficient and family-friendly will opt for the four-door variants that can seat up to six. Many drivers will find that the F-150 Lariat trim hits the sweet spot because of its power offerings and a long list of interior features. Furthermore, there’s a turbodiesel option for those who value fuel economy, and the Ford Raptor ideal for off-road enthusiasts.

The runner ups 

Coming in second place as one of the top-selling pickups is none other than the 2020 Ram pickup. By the end of Q3, Ram sold 156,156 trucks, a 3.4 percent decrease from last year. Still, the Ram 1500 persists as a formidable F-150 competitor because of its exceptionally smooth ride quality, luxurious car cabin, and of course, power. 

Rounding out the top three is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado. Chevy managed to sell 147,484 Silverados, with sales down by 5.1 percent in the same period. While the F-150 is the better truck overall, some may favor the Silverado because it comes with more in-car tech than the Ford.
