If you happened to buy a 2020 Toyota Supra, then we feel sorry for you. Not because the Supra is a bad car in any way, it’s fantastic, but the 2021 Supra is unfortunately better. However, if you’re still in the market a Supra, then there is one alternative that might be a better choice: the BMW M240i. Yes, it has the same engine as the 2020 Supra, and that’s partly the point, but the M240i also has so much more.

The BMW M240i looks more sophisticated than the Supra

Looks are definitely subjective, and we do think that the Toyota Supra does look simply amazing, we would say that the BMW M240i looks just a little more sophisticated. We know that some people might want to stand out from the rest and buying any BMW would lump them into that specific category, since all BMWs look the same to the untrained eye. However, we would argue that the Toyota Supra’s looks aren’t fit for everyone either. And although it does look like a proper sports car, the Supra looks more boy-racer like as compared to the softer and more-subtle M240i.

On the inside, the BMW M240i has about two inches of more headroom than the Supra, along with the same amount of shoulder and legroom. Of course, the M240i is still a compact coupe, so don’t expect 5 Series-like comfort here, but it does have a rear seat, which the Supra does not have. The rear seat can fit up to three (small) people, or two adults semi comfortably for really short trips, however, you would be completely out of luck if you bought a Supra.

The powertrain in the BMW M240i is similar to the one in the Supra

When the 2020 Toyota Supra was released, the biggest news (and let-down, to some) was that it had a BMW engine under the hood. Although it wasn’t built by Toyota, it still put out 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. Ironically, the BMW M240i is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. So it’s safe to say that both cars share the same engine, although, there could be some slight mechanical or tuning variations between the two.

One positive note for the M240i, is that its engine can be mated to either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and it puts the power through the rear wheels, however, an all-wheel-drive configuration is also available. As you can guess, the Supra doesn’t come with a manual transmission or all-wheel drive, but the 2021 model does come with about 30 more horsepower, so we’ll give it an advantage there. But if you want more customization with your driving experience, as well as more traction for winter driving conditions, then the BMW M240i could be the better choice.

The BMW 240i is technically cheaper

Pricewise, both the M240i costs about the same as the Supra. The 2020 BMW M240i has a starting price of around $45,000 for the rear-drive version and $47,000 for the all-wheel-drive variant. On the other hand, the new 2021 Supra starts at $50,000 and even the 2020 models are still going for around that price with some miles on them. Case in point, the M240i is technically cheaper and just as quick, as both cars can get to 60 mph in around 4 seconds. So when it comes to performance and price, the M240i and the Supra are practically the same. But when it comes to a little added comfort and all-wheel-drive capability, the BMW M240i is the better car to go with.
