The all-new 2020 Cadillac CT5 boasts a modern exterior design while still paying homage to Cadillac’s classic style. There are quite a few things to like about the CT5, including its ride quality comfort. But at the same time, it hasn’t made the best impression on respected critics.

In many ways, the Cadillac CT5 is just so-so

Aside from its handsome design, the CT5 also gets points from being fairly enjoyable to drive. It gets its power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 237-horsepower. There’s also an available twin-turbocharged V6 engine on the upper-level trims. No matter which one you choose, a 10-speed automatic comes standard. 

The base engine is the way to go if fuel efficiency is among your top priorities. It’s pretty fun to drive too. The V6 engine is a tempting choice, but some experts say it can be a bit laggy at times. Really, the CT5 seems like a great luxury option, until you compare its class rivals. Unfortunately, the CT5 doesn’t stack up well in its class, and that’s critics like U.S. News is simply unimpressed.

Reviewers at U.S. News acknowledging that the CT5 is a pleasant ride is enough to ride, but it isn’t charming in more ways than one. U.S. News feels that the CT5’s performance is dull compared to other models in the luxury midsize car realm. Reviewers also say that the CT5 has vague steering and a reluctant transmission. 

U.S. News isn’t a fan of the inside of the CT5 either

There is a mishmash of design elements inside the CT5. From a design standpoint, the CT5 is fancy upscale, but the quality of the interior materials is questionable. This Caddy offers a decent amount of space to seat up to five people, and its standard faux-leather upholstery is handsome. Even so, U.S. News thinks that the CT5’s plastic finishings take away from its upscale ones. Some passengers might also find that its seats aren’t supportive enough.

The CT5’s cargo space is also below the class average, making it a less practical option. We’d say that the CT5’s best quality on the inside is its easy-to-use infotainment system. A sharp 10-inch touchscreen comes standard along with wifi, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Additionally, the CT5 also comes with many driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking and a safety alert seat.

The CT5’s most exceptional redeeming quality 

The best thing about the CT5 is that it’s pretty affordable for a luxury model anyway. This Caddy has a starting price of $36,895, making it a more appealing option than others in its class. But if you can afford to go up a little more, it is worth looking at other models in the luxury midsize car class like the Lexus ES. U.S. News also explicitly recommends the Mercedes-Benz C-Class over the CT5. And if you really want to splurge, consider the BMW 5 Series.
