Every year, vehicles of all types get into some sort of fender bender. Whether your car gets a small dent in the body or one side gets crushed, it’s still a scary and frustrating thing to experience. Have you ever wondered, though, whether there’s been a specific type of vehicle that’s more prone than others to get into an accident? Is there one car that could cause more crashes than other vehicles?

Well, it’s a hard thing to tell, but Insurify gives us a little peek with their recent report. They pulled data from a few years’ worth of accidents and listed the top 10 vehicles that have had the most accidents in the previous few years.

The Subaru Crosstrek is popular but accident-prone

The Crosstrek is a small SUV, known for having the look of a lifted hatchback. With a ground clearance of over 8 inches, it doesn’t do well on off-beaten paths, but it handles all weather conditions just fine. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and has plenty of room to seat up to five passengers. The Subaru Crosstrek rolled out in 2012 and had a fairly decent start. As Motor Trend explains, they added a hybrid variant in 2013, but it never really took off. They discontinued the hybrid model in 2017, but the crossover SUV still seems to go strong.

The Subaru Crosstrek falls into the No. 1 spot for having the highest accident-prone rating. Insurify reported that the Crosstrek was involved in 25.81% of accidents according to the data they pulled from their database. This surprises many people, because the IIHS performed safety tests on it in 2019 and gave it the highest ratings of all the vehicles on the Insurify’s list. But, it wasn’t the only Subaru vehicle on the list.

Subaru makes the accident-prone list again

The Subaru WRX also found its way in the top 10 with a percentage of 24.9% of accidents. Like the Crosstrek, it also received high ratings from the IIHS for safety. But, on a side note, this vehicle made it to the No. 1 spot, with 20.12%, on Insurify’s list detailing the top 10 cars that received speeding violations.

This, however, does not surprise too many people. The Subaru’s WRX has a powerful turbocharged engine along with Subaru’s performance brake technology. Basically, it’s almost like having a race car rated for street driving, so it’s not hard to see drivers wanting to push it to its limits just to see what it can do. But, repairs to a car like this, when it gets into an accident, can be expensive and can cost just as much as the car.

Other vehicles that made it to the list

The vehicles that Subaru barely beat out on this list are the Honda HR-V, and the Hyundai Elantra GT. The HR-V gets 28/34 city/highway MPG and has about a $20,000 base price. It also is one of the most inexpensive vehicles listed on the report. But, Insurify says it was involved in 25.7% of the accidents reported in their research. The Hyundai Elantra GT came in slightly behind with 25.58%.

The two vehicles that have the least percentages on the list are the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and the Chevrolet Trax. The Santa Fe Sport doesn’t have the greatest fuel efficiency, with 21/27 city/highway MPG, which ranks the same as the Subaru WRX. It landed in the No. 10 slot with 23.92%. The Chevrolet Trax is one of the most affordable vehicles on the list, with a $21,300 base price. But, it lands in the No. 9 slot with 23.98% of accidents.

The report shows which vehicles are accident-prone, according to Insurify’s analysis of the data pulled. While it might concern you that one of the safest vehicles out there might not be so safe after all, keep in mind that you can still stay safe should you buy one of these vehicles. Just make sure you drive safely and avoid taking any unnecessary risks while on the road.
