2021 ushers in an updated exterior on the Chevy Colorado. According to Kelley Blue Book, there is a new front fascia along with updated badging and paint colors. You now have an option of two bed sizes, as well: a 5-foot-2 inch or a 6-foot-2-inch bed. That’s pretty handy for those that like the convenience of a pickup up but don’t need the extra bed length. The LT model gets an upgrade with a shiny new chrome option. 

The ZR2 gets a pumped-up off-road trim. It’s aggressive and decidedly brawny, perfect for the off-road enthusiasts or those who want to look like they are. The new grille design, with its side to side lettering and bold profile, makes it a head-turner. The off-road edition isn’t just good looks: it’s more functional with a skid plate, redesigned bumpers, higher suspension, and a wider track for stability.

The interior in the Chevrolet trucks focus on form and function, not necessarily high-end aesthetics, but they are well organized with adequate legroom in the second row. The WT boasts a 7-inch touchscreen. The LT has a larger 8-inch touchscreen with an updated infotainment system.

The Chevy Colorado’s performance

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado comes with a choice of powertrain options:

• A 200-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 with 191 lb-ft of torque
• A 308-hp 3.6-liter V6 with 275 lb-ft of torque
• The 186-hp 2.8-liter turbo diesel inline-4 with 369 lb-ft of torque

The new Chevy Colorado boasts best-in-class towing of up to 7,700 pounds while still rating high on fuel-efficiency. It also comes in either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, depending on the model. The 2WD model is expected to get up to 30 mpg, making MotorTrend’s most efficient midsize trucks list. The smart diesel exhaust brake reduces wear while increasing control – critical when towing large loads.

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado is the first midsize truck with a turbodiesel engine, which sets it apart from models like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Tacoma. Maybe the new Colorado’s Duramax diesel engine will start a trend for other trucks in the segment to follow.

Both the 2WD and 4WD models provide a smooth ride and effortless handling on the highway. You almost have to remind yourself that you are driving a truck. Even off-road, it remains comfortable while feeling controlled and capable. There is no teeth-rattling vibration or bounce in this ride. 

Standard and optional features

The new Chevy Colorado sports a cargo-box lighting and a locking tailgate as well as a CornerStep rear bumper as standard features on even the base models. The LT models sport standard rear-park assist and a bigger 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The bold ZR2 comes with the off-road bells and whistles like skidplates, tow hooks, and an enhanced suspension package.

Another notable feature of the 2021 Colorado is that it is the most customizable truck in its class. Besides the engine and bed options, there is also the option of a 4WD and low-range gearbox. Some of the nice-to-haves are fog lights, storage rails, and spray-in bed liner. If you want to up the profile, try the 20-inch wheels. Other convenient tech add-ons include wireless charging, Bluetooth audio, an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, and navigation.

If you are looking for a bargain price, you may want to check out the competition. Just remember, though, that you usually do get what you pay for. If you want power, economy, and a wide range of options, the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado stands out from the rest.
