The Chevy Equinox Is Facing a Troubling Problem
The Chevy Equinox is reasonably popular. In fact, with 270,994 models sold in 2020, the Equinox is the second most popular model offered by Chevrolet or General Motors. But these days? The 2021 Chevy Equinox is facing a troubling problem. Because, according to recent reports, it’s currently running at a 71-day supply, which points to a possible decline in sales.
The Chevy Equinox is experiencing a decline in sales
Now, understanding the 2021 Chevy Equinox’s problem means understanding that 60 days is considered “optimal” in the American auto industry. So, as CarBuzz reports, while dealers having a 71-day Equinox supply may not sound all that bad, automakers typically want to maintain no more than a 60-day supply. Anything less than that might indicate that the automaker can’t keep up with demand. But anything more? CarBuzz says that points to one of three things: oversupply, low demand, or even a bit of both.
Unfortunately, one thing is for certain. According to GM Authority, the Chevy Equinox is currently experiencing a decline in sales. While 270,994 models were sold in 2020, that number signifies a 22 percent decline in sales when compared to how many Equinox models were sold in 2019. But, much like CarBuzz reported, there are plenty of reasons that could explain the unexpected decline in sales that the Chevy Equinox is experiencing.
Car shoppers may be holding out for the 2022 Chevy Equinox
Here’s the thing, according to GM Authority, car shoppers may simply be waiting for the refreshed Equinox. Originally, the Chevy Equinox was supposed to undergo a mid-cycle enhancement for the 2021 model year. Unfortunately, that mid-cycle enhancement had to be pushed back thanks in part to pandemic-related complications.
The Equinox’s mid-cycle enhancement is nothing to scoff at, either. As part of the refresh, the Equinox is supposed to receive some updates to its front and rear fascias, as well as some improvements to the range-topping Premier trim level. The 2022 Equinox will also mark the introduction of a new trim level, the Equinox RS. Others might also be waiting for the introduction of the Equinox’s new engine.
The 2021 Chevy Blazer’s popularity could be to blame too
But there is another possible culprit to blame for the Equinox’s decline in sales. According to GM Authority, the Chevy Blazer experienced a 63 percent increase in sales in 2020. GM Authority reports that inventory was running at just 28 days at the beginning of the month too. Much like the Chevy Blazer, the Chevy Trailblazer also saw an increase in sales over the last few months. While that’s certainly good news for Chevy and its bottom line, that’s not exactly great news for this year’s Equinox.
What does this mean for the future of the Equinox?
There’s no denying that the Chevy Equinox is facing an unfortunate problem. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t recover. If anything, these sales numbers prove that Chevy really needs to impress its customer base with the 2022 model.
But until then? GM Authority reports that we’re probably going to see some pretty hefty discounts on the 2021 model. So, if you’d rather save a few bucks than stick around waiting for the 2022 model? Then now might be the time to buy the Equinox.
