The Chevy Silverado Finally Stomped the Ford F-150
It’s no secret that 2020 has been a wild year. It’s even been wild in the truck world, where the Chevy Silverado is finally shaping up against the Ford F-150. But General Motors and the GMC Sierra also deserve credit for selling more units than the F-150 and SuperDuty. Those trucks get to celebrate with the 2020 Chevy Silverado.
The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra sold more trucks than Ford
According to WSJ, General Motors just dethroned Ford Motor Company by selling more large pickup trucks in 2020. This is the first time that GM has sold more trucks than Ford since 2015.
The Chevy Silverado has been coming in second or third place against the Ford F-150 for years, so now it gets a chance to celebrate. While more Ford F-150 units sold in 2020 the Chevy Silverado did outsell it in a few states!
However, the Silverado can’t take all the credit. Two GM pickup trucks took down the king, including the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra. Sales for these two models rose by 3.9-percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
They sold 839,691 units despite facing disruption caused by the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. General Motors actually experienced an industry-wide 15-percent decrease in sales.
The Ford F-Series line, including the F-150 and Super Duty, fell by 12-percent in 2020 compared to 2018. They still managed to sell 787,422 units, but that wasn’t enough to maintain their throne.
Demand for large trucks from General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has been growing as the Silverado, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500 struggle to keep up. Large trucks accounted for 16.7-percent of overall vehicle sales, which is a 12.5-percent increase from 2015.
The Silverado 1500 vs. the F-150
Because the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150 have the most popular rivalry, we will see how they compare. The Silverado has an MSRP of about $28,500, and the F-150 begins around $28,745, making them very competitively priced. These prices do not include the destination fees or the dealership markups, so pricing may vary depending on your area.
The 2020 Silverado has five engines to choose from. The 5.3-liter V8 pumps out 355 HP and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine provides 277-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. You can tow up to 13,400 lb and carry a payload of up to 2,543 lb with the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500.
The 2020 F-150 also has five engine options. The 5.0-liter V8 pumps out 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine churns out 250-hp 440 lb-ft of torque. You can tow up to 13,000 lb and carry a payload of up to 3,270 lb with the 2020 Ford F-150.
Is the Silverado 1500 better than the F-150?
The Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150 have their strengths and weaknesses in different areas. For example, the Silverado diesel engine has more torque, and the F-150 can carry a heavier payload. You need the right truck to suit your individual needs.
The GMC Sierra and Silverado may not have sold more vehicles than the F-150 because they are better. Covid caused manufacturers to shut down to protect workers.
Plus, some started manufacturing personal protective equipment (PPE) instead of trucks. Also, some auto manufacturers are facing supply shortages, leading to production delays.
But what we do know is that for the first time in years, General Motors has sold more trucks than Ford. This is an interesting tide change, as the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 are usually stuck battling for second place.
