Mazda may not be a luxury automaker, but it definitely knows how to make some incredible vehicles. That being said, some of its SUVs are definitely superior to others. According to Consumer Reports, the Mazda CX-30 is great by SUV terms in general, but it couldn’t quite keep up with its siblings. However, it appears the verdict might have changed.

The Mazda CX-30 supposedly missed the mark

Mazda is trying to make itself known, and it’s doing this by making some incredibly reliable vehicles.

According to Consumer Reports,

“This small automaker is most known for crafting a fun-to-drive character into its models. Mazda uses lightweight construction and efficient engine technology to bolster fuel economy without resorting to hybrid or other advanced technologies. Although often overlooked by consumers, more often than not, Mazdas deliver nimble handling throughout its line.”

The review site went on to add, “Overall, Mazda’s new models are the most reliable of all brands currently.”

It’s SUV line up is especially stellar. While the 2020 CX-3 has yet to be rated, the other models all have 5/5 in predicted reliability, except the CX-30.

After more research the verdict appears to be in. The reliability verdict was changed to a 5/5 for the CX-30. This just goes to show how predicted reliability should be taken with a grain of salt. This is especially true for a new model like the CX-30.

What caused the CX-30 to intially get a lower score than its siblings?

The power equipment on the 2020 Mazda CX-30 scored 4 out of 5. This is a wide range of equipment, which includes cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, and the alarm or security system. Consumer Reports didn’t go into details about which area led to the lowered score.

There are also two recalls that can’t be ignored. The first involves the fuel system. There is a possibility of a fuel leak that can lead to a fire. This can also cause the engine to stall, which could lead to a crash.

The second recall involves the service brakes. The 2020 CX-30 has loose brake calipers that can reduce the braking efficiency. It can also interfere with wheel rotation, which can result in a wreck.

Both of these recalls are something that can’t be ignored, but Mazda isn’t. Owners who have affected vehicles can bring it into their local dealership, and the necessary repairs will be made. 

Consumer Reports was also disappointed by the tight interior and loud engine noises. Other areas of frustration include poor acceleration and an infotainment system that can prove to be very difficult to use.

The Mazda CX-30 has proven to be a reliable choice

The 2020 CX-30 is ranked #1 out of 8 in reliability amongst 2020 SUVs by Consumer Reports. The overall reliability verdict got a perfect score. The recalls and the power equipment did bring the CX-30 down a little, but otherwise, it is still a very reliable vehicle.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 got great test results from both IIHS and the NHTSA. It got 5 out of 5 stars during the crash test, and the IIHS has no complaints either. 

The price range is also an enticing win for anyone on a budget who still desires a new SUV. It starts at $21,900 and tops out at $29,600. That’s not a bad price for a new SUV, especially for a Mazda.

Overall, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 manages to live up to the high standards that Mazda has assigned to itself.
