The Do’s and Don’ts of Off-Roading
So, you just picked an off-roading adventure location, but you might not be sure of how to prepare for the excursion. Off-roading can get pretty dicey which is why preparation is key. Technically, you can off-road in any vehicle, but a designated heavy-use SUV or truck is the best way to go. Dune buggies, dirt bikes, and ATVs are also fun. We have created a short list to help you prepare for your off-roading trip.
Don’t: Improvise
Don’t just try and wing it on your off-roading experience, especially if it’s your first one. Each terrain has its own unique challenges and literal bumps along the way. Because of this, it’s important to research the trail you want to explore. Exploring natural terrain can go from fun to dangerous real quick.
Do: Prepare
Be prepared! After you have researched your ideal trail, align your planning arrangements with your quest. Ensure your ride is ready to go by checking your tire pressure or consider whether you need new designated off-roading tires for your trip.
Furthermore, check for leaky fluids as well as for any cracks in your exterior. It’s also tremendously important to check the brightness of your head and tail lights. The day trip you planned for can easily turn into one that’s overnight. Off-roading trails are usually in isolated areas so you don’t want to be caught in the dark. Get a map of the area you’re exploring and review any necessary permits you need to complete. You will also want to review other ground rules and available security. Remember to fill up your tank before you go too.
Don’t: Forget Your Toolkit
When it comes to driving in general, it’s critical that you have the right items in case of emergencies. Off-roading is a real adventure so you will need items like tactical gloves, a headlamp or flashlight, as well as a tire repair kit. Make sure you also have a first aid kit, standard toolkit, and jump starter. Even if you’re not planning for an overnight trip, pack like you are anyway. Having an extra set of clothes, blankets, and snacks can really come in handy.
Do: Bring a Friend
You don’t want to go on an adventure in an isolated area alone. A friend is great to have along for the ride to assist with navigation, help in case of trouble, and just be there to keep you company. Off-roading is meant to be an exciting experience and being able to share it with someone makes it even better.
Don’t: Compromise the Environment
Off-roading gets a bad rep sometimes because of the potential damage to the environment. If you aren’t careful, you can hurt growing wildlife or even animals. Some trails have rules in place to prevent wildlife harm. Just make sure you are aware of the rules as you do your research and preparation.
Do: Have Fun
Off-roading is meant to be fun! Thoroughly plan for your trip but don’t overwhelm yourself. Approach your trip cautiously, but lightheartedly. The right tools and company only make the ride that much more enjoyable.
