The all-electric Genovation GXE just beat its previous top speed with a new record of 210.2 mph. That means it’s the fastest electric car you can buy. And while that is a big accomplishment, Genovation has hinted at more record attempts soon. So who are these guys, and why are they doing this?

Genovation is a Rockville, Maryland, company that will take your seventh-generation Corvette Grand Sport and swap the V8 for an electric powertrain. The goal is to create a limited run of 75 of these Corvette EVs, with each one capable of 220 mph. Oh, and to make it street legal.

Electric Corvette Teardown

Once you sign up and deliver your Corvette Grand Sport, Genovation has to basically tear it apart. The front and rear ends are removed along with the hood, side-view mirrors, engine, rear suspension, wheels, gas tank, and all of the interior. Once that’s done, it’s ready for the electric conversion.

Five packages of nickel-cobalt-aluminum/nickel/cobalt/manganese batteries are secured into the Corvette’s structure. Rinehart Motion Systems inverters take the 800-volts to a pair (or dual stack) of 300-kW/475-Nm AMRacing electric motors. A Stafl Systems powertrain controller guides the current. This is the heart of the conversion.

Genovation Power

To create the fastest electric car, the two AMRacing motors put out 800 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. A stock transaxle and upgraded rear end transfer power to the wheels, which get signals from Genovtion’s traction-control system.

You may wonder why Genovation keeps the transaxle since most EVs only have a single gear. Reportedly, the dual motors require constant power once they get into the 6500 rpm range. Max rpm is at 10,000. To maintain the constant flow Genovation incorporated the Corvette transmission. Of course, at full-tilt, you use a lot of power, draining the battery rapidly. But there are six selectable modes that allow you to lessen the power drain.

Other Changes

DSC Sport programmable coilovers at each corner and lightweight Carbon Revolution carbon-fiber wheels complete the drivetrain and suspension package. 

A Genovation grille with carbon-fiber splitter identifies the front and a sealed-off undercarriage forms a carbon-fiber rear diffuser. Around back, you get an adjustable, programmable rear wing and carbon-fiber rear fascia with requisite circular taillights complete the rear.

Inside new Lotuff leather and Alcantara abound, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system produces ambient tunes, and 10.4-inch color touchscreen sits between the seats eliminating the center console. It has capabilities for retrieving track day data acquisition to review each and every run. 

The final step is the body gets lavished with tri-tone paint colors of your choice. 

Pricing

So you’re asking, “How much will this new Genovation Corvette cost?” Glad you asked. While the regular Corvette starts just under $70,000, the Genovation version will run you an eye-watering $750,000. As pricey as that is, the fastest electric car you can buy was never going to be cheap.

Range of the Fastest Electric Car

Due to the performance aspect of the Corvette, EV range is lessened. The 60-kWh battery pack should be good for about 130 miles range. But range is not what you buy this for, right? You’re down for the 800+ hp and over 700 lb-ft of torque you can fling around a track. Speaking of that weight distribution is 50:50. 

The first deliveries of the Genovation corvettes should be happening about now, so it won’t be long before we are hearing about flying mile runs and other uses giving us a better idea of just how much reach Genovation has in racing circles.
