If the Ford F-Series have been the best selling pickup trucks in America for over 40 years. It would stand to reason then that the F-Series would also be the best selling used pickup, right? After all, if the pickup trucks are that popular new, they must be popular also on the used market, or so the thinking is. But, that is not the case at all. In fact, data shows that the fastest-selling used pickup truck is not even from an American brand.

The fastest-selling used pickup

A survey just released by ISeeCars, is an analysis of sales in the country between March 2020 and June 2020. The data shows that the fastest-selling used pickup is from Honda. The Ridgeline is selling on average in 51.7 days. It is followed closely by the Ram 1500 Classic at 52 days. The Toyota Tacoma rounds out the top three at 60.5 days.

Where is Ford on the used pickup list? On the survey, the Ford F-150 averaged at 74.8 days before being sold. That places the pickup at 11th in the speed ranking. The slowest-selling used pickup on the survey is the Ford Ranger. That sold on average in 79.2 days and ranked 14th. 

COVID slowed pickup sales

It is important to note that COVID-19 had an effect on the survey. According to iSeeCars, the pandemic triggered an increased stall time of 37.5 percent. This makes sense considering that at the beginning of the regional lockdowns many dealerships were forced to temporarily close their doors to comply with emergency ordinances. 

“The effective demand for these vehicles has slowed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic due to lockdowns and downturns in the economy, but the change was much more dramatic for new vehicles than for used vehicles” – iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly

Ford introduced a new pickup

As far as new pickup sales, the F-Series ranked 10th on the list at 122.8 days. A contributing factor Ford’s F-Series lag time is that many consumers were already aware prior to COVID that the current generation of the pickup was in its last year before a major overhaul. The debut of that new 2021 truck actually came in June, in the midst of various COVID lockdowns, and just after the survey data was extracted. 

Ridgeline sells fastest

The good news, however, is in the Honda Ridgeline camp. The Honda Ridgeline has never been a top-selling pickup when it comes to the new side of the market. Consumers have often argued whether the Ridgeline was even a real pickup. Regardless, the trucks seem to sell pretty quickly in the used market, faster than all other brands for this period. That means that consumers have found something they like and are seeking the trucks out. 

Pickup trucks will always be popular selling vehicles in both the new and used forms. The Ridgeline mid-size pickup happens to be the hit of the here and now in the used truck market. It is also a strong contender for people that do not necessarily need the heavy towing capability but still want a bed, and a somewhat better fuel mileage rating when compared to other trucks. Apparently, that is exactly what people were looking for during the time the survey was conducted.
