The Ford Bronco Sport Barely Beats the Jeep Renegade
Now that people are finally test driving the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, we can provide a more fair comparison to Jeep Renegade. Both these SUVs are boxy, cute, and meant to be off-roaders, but how does the Ford Bronco Sport compare?
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport vs. the Jeep Renegade
While the Ford Bronco Sport is new and exciting, the Jeep Renegade has been proving itself for a few years. The Bronco Sport may be the new and intriguing option, but that doesn’t mean the Renegade should be automatically passed up. Also, the Bronco Sport is nicknamed the Baby Bronco, so that’s just adorable. The Jeep Renegade is a stand-alone model with nothing baby about it!
First, let’s cover pricing. The Jeep Renegade has an M.S.R.P. of about $22,850, while the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport starts at about $26,660. The off-roading Jeep Renegade Trailhawk trim raises the price to about $28,000, while the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands begins around $32,660. So, the Bronco Sport is more expensive than the Renegade, but do you get more with it?
Bronco Sport and Jeep Renegade performance
The Bronco Sport brings a bit more muscle to the table. It has a 1.5-liter turbocharged base engine with 181 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. Then you can upgrade to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. But the more powerful engine is only available with the Badlands, and First Edition trims.
The base engine in the Jeep Renegade is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 180 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. You can also upgrade to the 1.3-liter four-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine for 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque.
But isn’t the Bronco Sport just a boxy Ford Escape? Yes, and no. It shares the same platform as the Escape but is built for off-roading, despite only having all-wheel drive instead of four-wheel drive.
According to Motor Trend, the Bronco Spot has a higher ground clearance than the Renegade at 8.8-inches compared to 8.7-inches, but the Renegade has better approach angles. They say that the Bronco Sport should be able to follow the Renegade most places.
Both S.U.V.s have driving modes for snow, ice, mud, rock crawling, and more. While the Badlands Bronco has a G.O.A.T. (Go Over Any Terrain) mode, Jeep already means go anywhere.
Bronco Sport and Jeep Renegade Features
The Bronco Sport and Jeep Renegade are similar in size. While the Renegade offers 59 cubic feet of cargo space, the Bronco Sport provides 65 cubic feet of cargo space. The Bronco Sport is also noted for having more head and leg space.
Inside both SUVs, you’ll find tons of cute easter eggs. The Renegade has a sasquatch on the tinted rear window, but the Ford Bronco Sport has a bottle opener. Both S.U.V.s have durable fabrics and easy to wash rubber mats too. Edmunds suggests that if you want a nicer interior, check out the Mazda CX-5.
Doug DeMuro from Cars and Bids also mentioned that the interior of the Bronco Sport Badlands is a little disappointing and cheap for a vehicle that costs over $30,000. The Jeep Renegade may provide a more comfortable ride. With the Bronco Sport, you’re paying more for an optional power increase and a little more space.
