The Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram Rebel TRX Could Fall Prey to the Chevy Silverado ZRX
It’s not new news that Chevrolet is ramping up a rival for the Ford Raptor and the Ram Rebel––and it’s kind of a big deal. Chevy has been simmering in the background. Watching the success of both the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ram Rebel has undoubtedly fueled the fire to produced something epic to take down the competitors. With any amount of success for the Silverado ZRX and the release of a GMC dune jumping trail truck, GM will easily overtake the truck sales competition.
There has been plenty of talk as to what type of engine this Chevrolet ZRX will come equipped with. And Chevy has plenty of options. At the very least, Chevrolet will want to bring something to the table that can compete with a Hellcat-having Ram Rebel. That means somethings beefy with 600-700 horsepower. Either way, the Chevrolet Silverado ZRX is part of a big push from GM to dominate truck sales once and for all.
“The Silverado ZRX will reportedly pick up a rock-hopping suspension featuring the same sort of delightful Multimatic DSSV dampers that deliver a remarkable blend of comfort and capability in the ZR2, as well as locking differentials for both front and rear axles, and a host of other upgrades and changes to improve its capabilities beyond the pavement, including tweaks that improve approach and departure angles.”

Ram Trucks sales
Last year in 2019, Ram Trucks sold 633,694 trucks to the American people. The Ram Rebel TRX, as reported by fellow MotorBiscuit writer HJ Pizzaro, is currently in development with a possible reveal later this month. This fall we should see Ram’s Raptor Rival hit production, and with the arrival of a new Rebel TRX trail truck we are sure to see an increase in Ram Trucks sales numbers.
If the first quarter of 2020 is telling, we are already seeing a trend toward higher GM and Ram sales and a decline in Ford truck sales. According to data on GM Authority, Ram trucks saw an improvement from 2019’s first quarter, while Ford truck sales saw a year to year decrease of about 13%.
Ford F-Series truck sales
Ford truck sales were at 896,526 units last year, according to statista.com. After a lifetime of market-dominating sales data, the Ford pickup truck is probably getting a little nervous about lising its best-selling title. The Ford F-150 is the most sold truck ever and the Ford Raptor is a member of that club.
But if the Raptor sees these rivals hit production, it could fall prey to the Ram Rebel TRX and the Chevrolet Silverado ZRX. This year’s first sales quarter saw 186,526 pickup trucks sold for Ford, 128,805 for Ram, 144,734 for Chevrolet, and 53,009 units for GMC––according to GM Authority.
But if you combine both the GMC truck sales with the Chevy sales it comes out to 197,743. That means that GM sold more trucks than Ford in the first quarter this year. And there is really no telling how this year is going to play out.
Chevrolet and GMC truck sales show that GM is closing in on the competition
For four decades, Ford trucks have dominated with winning sales data year after year. But if we see a Chevy Silverado ZRX Raptor fighter enter production in the next year or so, I think it’s safe to say GM is poised to take over US truck sales. GM sales strategy saw a very successful first quarter in 2020. It’s not off base to assume that whatever they produce may also carry over into some wild GMC Sierra off-roader, too. If so, Ford and Ram are toast.
In fact, Chevrolet and GMC trucks’ combined sales overtook Ram trucks by nearly 200,000 units. GM’s pending release of the Chevy Silverado ZRX is no doubt a threat to Ford’s truck sales. Especially since we saw all three of Ford’s competitors (GMC, Chevrolet, Ram Trucks) improve for the first quarter of 2020 sales while Ford sales sunk down a few notches. By 2022, the Chevy Silverado ZRX sales might eat the Raptor and the Rebel alive.
