A few years ago, your only option for an all-electric car was to purchase an expensive Tesla. Nowadays, EVs are no longer a niche market. Several automakers have already released their own all-electric models or plan to do so in the near future. The Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Kona EV are two good examples of affordable all-electric cars with great driving range.

Ford, one of the most popular American automakers, is also developing its own line of electric vehicles. You may have already seen the all-electric F-150’s demonstration video, but there’s another model that will be released beforehand. The Mustang Mach E is the first all-electric version of the popular Mustang model. According to new data, it may even be able to outsell the upcoming Tesla.

Some states are more ‘pro-Ford’ than others

Both the Tesla Model Y and the Mustang Mach E are creating a buzz on Twitter. To see which one was more popular, PartCatalog.com created a map based on the geotagged data. According to this map, nearly half of the states show more support for Ford than Tesla.

Tesla has won over the two largest states, which are Alaska and Texas. However, a good chunk of the Midwest seems to be ‘Ford country’. There are also more Ford supporters in the southern states.

Of course, it’s impossible to know how many of these users are actually planning to buy either car. However, it at least shows that Ford’s newest all-electric model has already attracted a lot of interest.

The Ford Mustang Mach E

The new electric mustang will have four main trims, each with a slightly different electric range. With standard rear-wheel drive, the base model has an all-electric range of 230 miles. Two higher trims, the California RT 1 and the Premium, can drive up to 300 miles on a full charge.

Ford also promises that certain models can reach the same speed as the gas-operated Mustang. The most expensive trim, the GT, can reach 0-60 mph in the three-second range. The other trims get respectable numbers as well, either within five or six seconds.

A First Edition trim was also produced, with exclusive red brake calipers and a striking red paint job. It also has the most powerful motor of the bunch, capable of 332 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque.

The Tesla Model Y

According to Tesla’s website, the upcoming Model Y will be available in three different versions. The Performance model is the fastest and comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive. It boasts a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, with a max speed of 150 mph.

The Long Range RWD model will have the best driving range at 300 miles. However, it has a lower 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds. The Long Range AWD drive is a little faster at 4.8 seconds. It has a slightly shorter driving range of 280 miles.

When will these cars be released?

The Mustang Mach E will show up on dealer lots near the end of this year. It has a starting MSRP of nearly $44k. The Model Y is set to be released this summer, with an MSRP of $47k.

Elon Musk has also announced that a cheaper version will be released in 2021. It has a driving range of 230 miles and will cost around $39k. 

Will the Mustang Mach E really be able to outsell the Model Y? It’s hard to say until either car is released. However, given Ford’s loyal customer base and the data from Twitter, it certainly has a good chance. Preorders for the Mustang’s First Edition trim have already sold out.
