There’s something about a luxury car that consumers just love. Not only do you get a superior driving experience, but it’s also a status symbol. Not all luxury cars are created equal, however. 

To help potential owners figure out which luxury cars are worth their rather expensive price tags, Consumer Reports has put together a list of ultra-luxury sedans ranked from best to worse. The Genesis G90 managed to beat out most of the other cars to become the third-best luxury vehicle on the list.

Third place isn’t so bad after all

They say that third place means you were beat out by two other competitors, but in this case, it was a hard-fought battle. Hyundai is trying to break into the luxury segment with its Genesis brand, and so far, it’s making a lot of waves. 

Genesis isn’t as well known as other luxury brands such as BMW or Porsche, but that might just change. The fact that the 2020 Genesis G90 managed to beat out competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Maserati Quattroporte speaks volumes.

Consumer Reports isn’t the only one pleased with the G90. Kelley Blue Book is also thoroughly impressed with it, and couldn’t say enough good things about the G90.

If that isn’t enough to prove that the G90 is a spectacular luxury sedan, even if it did take third place, IIHS gave the G90 one of its most prestigious award. The G90 was awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick+. It appears that the G90 can do no wrong.

What did Consumer Reports love?

There are two engine options available on the 2020 Genesis G90. The first is a velvety smooth 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 365 hp. The second is a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 420 hp. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic. If you are interested in AWD, it’s available as optional.

The interior is also quite nice. Consumer Reports called it conventional, but that’s not actually a bad thing. There is plenty of wood and chrome trim, comfortable seating, and the audio system is one of the best on the market.

The one shocker from the review was the fact that the back seat is more comfortable than the front seats. Given the reputation the back seat has developed for being uncomfortable, this was a pleasant surprise.

The G90’s price also played a role in its position as third place. It costs from $72,200 – $78,200. Given the costs of the sedans the G90 competes against, it’s clear that the 2020 Genesis G90 is a real bargain.

According to Consumer Reports,

“Unlike Hyundai’s previous luxury sedan, the Equus, the G90 is a thoroughly capable and competitive luxury sedan that if you ignore brand cachet, can challenge the world’s best. It undercuts most ultra-luxury flagships by a good $20,000, yet cedes very little to them.”

Which cars beat out the Genesis G90?

There were only two vehicles that managed to beat out the 2020 Genesis G90, and it was a close battle. The 2020 Tesla Model S beat out the G90 by one point, while the BMW 7 Series by four points.

The Tesla Model S beat out the G90 based on its superior range. The G90 gets a flimsy 18 mpg, while the Model S gets 102 MPGe. That’s tough for other electric vehicles to top, much less a gasoline-powered vehicle. The 2020 Model S costs from $74,990 – $94,990.

The 2020 BMW 7 Series really stood out from the crowd and had an almost perfect score on the road test. It was a huge win for the 7 Series, as it finally beat out the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The fact that the Genesis managed to keep up with the likes of BMW and Tesla is astonishing. It just shows how far Hyundai has come in recent years.
