The GMC Sierra EV Will Get One Special Feature the Chevy Version Won’t
Two of the most anticipated trucks for 2024 include the new Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV. Both are based on the massive GMC Hummer EV truck that debuted earlier this year, and that truck comes with massive power and several special features. But GMC is General Motors’ premium truck brand, and that means GMCs get features Chevy’s don’t. What’s the one feature that the GMC will get that the Chevy won’t?
Only GMC Sierra EV features the can Crab Walk
According to Doug Demuro in a new video about the Silverado EV, only GMC trucks will get the Crab Walk feature. While Chevy’s Silverado EV will get four-wheel steering, it won’t get the funky sideways driving ability that the GMC will get. With the Crab Walk feature, all four wheels turn in the same direction allowing the truck to drive sideways. In the Hummer EV, it can only be engaged at low speeds and disengages if you’re going over 25 mph.
The Crab Walk feature is probably necessary in the positively massive GMC Hummer EV. That truck needs the feature to maneuver in tight city driving, and it’s probably a boon to parallel parking. The Silverado EV is also a long truck, about 233 inches long, so the Crab Walk feature should help that truck park and navigate trails, as well. The GMC Sierra EV will also have “regular” four-wheel steering, which should also help the truck navigate tight parking lots.
How much power will the GMC Sierra EV have?
Like the massive GMC Hummer EV, the Sierra EV will have massive power. It won’t have that truck’s incredible 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. But it will have 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque from it’s two motors. The Hummer has three motors. The Sierra EV should have a range of more than 400 miles with an optional battery pack. That power means it can tow 9,500 pounds, according to Fox News.
The Max Power Mode allows for maximum acceleration. It’s GMC’s version of Chevy’s Wide Open Watts, or WOW, mode. The Sierra is targeted at a mature luxury buyer, and as such GMC has ditched the Watts To Freedom mode, or WTF moniker, for the super-fast acceleration mode.
How much will the GMC Sierra EV cost?
The top-of-the-line Denali Edition 1 truck should cost $107,000. That truck will have every option and should be on par with the current luxury Denali versions. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2024, or about four months after the Chevy Silverado EV delivers will begin. However, GMC promises that trucks will be available with an MSRP of around $50,000.
The GMC Sierra EV will also come in several packages, including an off-road oriented AT4 version. The Elevation trim should be a less-expensive version. However, GMC is already sold out of its first run so you may have to wait several years for delivery of a Sierra EV.
