Quick, what’s the fastest truck in the world? Today it’s the Rivian R1T, with the Ram 1500 TRX hot on its heels. But for years, the correct answer would have been the legendary GMC Syclone. This AWD compact truck was so fast that Road and Track pitted it against a Ferrari in its head-to-head review. But while modern supertrucks cost upwards of $100k, you can still get into a used GMC Syclone for under $30k.

A 1991 GMC Syclone sold on Cars & Bids for $22k

Back in 2021, a 1991 GMC Syclone supertruck showed up on the Cars & Bids website. It was far from a showroom-quality example, with 117k miles, reported paint chips, a dented fender, a cracked dashboard, and driver’s seat wear.

That said, it had the original turbocharged V6 engine from the Buick Grand National and GMC AWD system that enabled it to reach 60 MPH faster than the Ferraris of its day. The truck was running and driving, well cared for, and in good shape.

Here’s the crazy part: while Ram 1500 TRXs and Ford F-150 Raptors already commanded over $70k, this collectible and drivable supertruck sold for a measley $22k.

A $29k GMC Syclone failed to sell on Ebay

Here’s an even crazier story. A 1991 GMC Syclone showed up on eBay this year. Its owner listed it at a fairly high price, and it didn’t sell. So they dropped the price and listed it again. And again. They finally tried to sell their GMC Syclone supertruck with a $29k “buy it now” price, but no dice. At the time of this writing, the Syclone’s classified ad has expired.

Now, some buyer may have contacted the owner and struck a deal. If so, we have no way of knowing how much this supertruck actually changed hands for. But we know that at $29k, there weren’t multiple buyers interested.

There are multiple other GMC Syclones currently listed at much higher prices ($60k-$70k), and some show-quality trucks may actually sell for that. But there are no recorded sales on eBay at that price.

The GMC Syclone is a collectible truck collectors don’t appreciate

The GMC Syclone was a piece of automotive history. GMC’s decision to throw a Buick Grand National engine and AWD powertrain in its compact pickup truck would inspire supertrucks for generations to come.

But because the Chevrolet Silverado 454SS and Ford F-150 SVT Lightning were full-size trucks, neither could hang with the GMC Syclone supertruck. For this reason, the Syclone held onto the 0-60 record for years.

Apparently, the GMC Syclone could get to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. To put that in context, the Hellcat-powered TRX’s best tested time was 3.7 seconds. Car and Driver found it could only get the Syclone to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. But that was quick enough to beat the brand new Ferrari 348ts that it pitted the truck against.

It’s safe to say that the GMC Syclone has reached peak depreciation. But GMC isn’t making any more classic Syclones (though you can order the badge on a 2023 Sierra). So this piece of automotive history’s value can only increase: get one while you can!
